2008 Yamaha and Suzuki MotoGP bikes tested at Motegi

The Yam looks a bit ugly at the back, why do they always go for that point its dangerous
<

The Yamaha's fairing is starting to look like the Ducati. I'm surprised this didn't happen earlier.

The Suzuki's are hard to see. I wonder if Hopper gets to even lay a finger print on one of the 08's

It's amazing how much narrower the bikes look. I wonder if anyone will take a gamble on the longitudenly mounted I-4.

I'm guessing it won't happen. They'll probably keep overlapping cylinders until it's a W config. Still, it's interesting to think how much narrower these bikes are going to get.

Something to do woth gyroscopic forces, the longitidenally arranged engines on bike are difficult to control

I am surprised none of the bike's engines were switched to screamers.

Does anyone know if VW have a patent on their VR6 engine technology, i'd be interested to know if a VR4 would be any good in a gp bike.

These bike sound awesome, i only wish they didn't turn the volume down for those silly commentators to blabber on.

I don't think the VR would have any signficant advantages over the standard V configuration. But, the engine would be wider resulting in reduced ground clearance when leaned over. Plus, the engine may be more difficult to cool.

Well that's true. But VR is narrower than inline config and would allow teams like Yamaha and Kawasaki to keep the engine mass close to the front wheel while making the chassis narrower.

It's definitely of no use to the V-4 runners but the W config may be useful if they have room for a lengthened engine. I'm not sure about the complications. Obviously, a W4 would be significantly different than a W8 because it would be pointless for a W4 to have any cylinders on a matching horizontal axis. A horizontal axis for each cylinder causes serious valve acutation issues that I could never solve without the use of four cams. I guess that's why I don't work in the paddock.

IMHO, unless you make the engine narrower, increasing the number of banks , say V to W won;t make much of a difference. A W 4 engine will still need to have 2 transverse cylinders on one of the banks. now a W 3 may be slimmer, but think of the complexity of routing all those exhaust pipes

W engine is totally out of the question with only 4 cylinders, i just considered a VR 4 could be better than an inline, but i don't know enough about it right now, and i'm pretty sure its not free to use technology, or else we would see more cars using it.
