Why did Stoner run 250cc in 2002?

I think his end aim was to get to motogp, and it was a big personal push to get there so any way in was what he wanted. They intended to take whatever they got at first and indeed the 125 ride he got after the 250 may have been the only option, for staying in touch with the end goal of getting into motogp ..... see in Aust. The 125's and 250's don't seem to have the pertinence they may have elsewhere, and motogp is "it".

Thats funny I was reading the exact same thing this morning and wondering the exact same thing

Its a good quesiton. Is it because he wasn't ready for the big leagues?

On another note, I read a few more profiles and dismissed it because they are all out of date. I read Dovi's and was like WTF. They conclude with "Dovi turns down a motogp ride in order to pursue a 250cc campionship".

MOTOGP.COM has had the whole offseason to adjust the description under these profiles. They have the riders correct but really half assed their descriptions.

Im trying to find out the laps times of Capi and Stoner when Stoner was given the 990 duc to try out. I think it was a the end of the 2006 season.

Nevermind. He never used the 990. He whent straight to 800cc.

He wanted that "King Of Crash" title. And he failed to do so. And he managed to do it 4 years later...

I was under the impression that he moved down because he struggled with the 250 with so little experience. He didn't particularly shine and of course he had his crashes, so they moved him down to something simpler. It was obviously a good decision because he got to grips with things and was much better for it when he moved back up to 250.

Whilst that is true - he did struggle - the reason he went straight to 250s from the British 125 championship was because there was no seat available in 125 GPs. He would have preferred to enter via 125s, but decided to give the 250s a shot rather than not enter the GP scene at all that year.

I would call that the reason he was in 250 to begin with rather than the reason he moved down after one year, but interesting to know. He did alright for himself to get into such a high profile team out of nowhere, obviously now we have all seen why
