Why can no one stand up to Rossi in the last lap of a race?

OK then lets clarifiy. Rossi has achieved godlike status because he is consistent.

Not a consistent podium finisher or points earner. A la Edwards or Hayden or what-not. But a consistent winner!!

Hallelujah Rossi!

Funny you say that...I agree a God he is not, but when I went to Laguna I had a chance to talk to Kevin Schwantz....I asked him what he thought about Rossi...and he said to me...and I quote..."he's better than I ever was or could have been" "he's easily the greatest rider we've ever seen in this sport".....it was a great pleasure to talk to Kev that weekend...it was a highlight......just thought it would add something here....

Well I would respectfully disagree with Schwantzy. I believe that had he been racing with Roberts Yamaha instead of Rainey the early 90s would have been a lot different and he would have had multiple more championships to his name. My opinion is Schwantz was the most talented rider to ever grace a 500cc/MotoGP grid. As I've said before though, it's impossible to compare riders of different eras.

I was actually really surprised he said that...sounded pretty candid to me. I agree its pretty tough to compare "cross/era" even just from a technological standpoint...ie...could Schwantz even put in a good time with a new GP machine....handle it absolutely...but deliver top results...its impossible to guess.....I'd disagree in the sense that I think Rossi has the most raw talent, but that's only for history to decide....you know?

I agree with Ooost, I think Schwantz had more raw talent than Rossi (but not by much), However, Rossi races with his head where Scwantz raced with his balls, giving the doc Rainey's consistency with Schwantz's talent, and therefore making him look better on paper

Doohan loves him as well. All the big ex-champs have a thing for him, I think. I reckon it'd be really intresting to hear what Carl "I'm Jealous of MotoGP" Foggy has to say about Rossi.

He thinks Doohan's the man. From his book "Foggy" and talking about Doohan:
"He had mastered the bikes when they were difficult and won five world titles. When the fuel was changed to unleaded...Loris Capirossi and Valentino Rossi made the move from 250s and were among the fastest in testing straight away" That was written back in 2000.

Actually Foggy boasted that he would have been a consistent winner against Doohan, yeah really!

but I think nightmares about him would be more likely Richo.
