The FIM named him a MotoGP Legend on October 20, 2013 prior to the 2013 MotoGP race at Philip Island, Australia.

Well that certainly answered my question...LOL

Still...totally undeserved
BTW I was a fan of his but I think he was over-rated

How the F-U-C-K is Valentino Rossi not a Legend? If FIM has not named Rossi a Legend yet, FIM is filled with ....-sucking morons.

Mick Doohan was my favourite as a kid, not seen much of riders prior to him although from what I've read, Hailwood was an absolute God of a rider.

It depends how you look at it. I certainly think there are and were more 'complete' riders out there, but one cannot deny that Stoner probably has the most raw talent to be able to ride anything he stepped a leg over at the absolute limit though he didn't have the mental strength and racecraft of others.

Agreed, he did moan and cry a lot though.

Stoner had more impact on MotoGP than almost any other rider in recent history. Stoner completely polarised the entire MotoGP fan base. By coming from relative obscurity to winning a championship on a Ducati he completely upset the status quo which lead to massive changes in the sport. Michelin left and Bridgestone became control tyre. Every rider who ever followed him or saw his data was gobsmacked by what he did on a motorcycle.

No other rider in the history of the sport, at the top of the game, has ever walked away on their own terms, because they were their own man. Stoner didn't quit. Stoner made a decision that his family and the way he want to build his life did not fit the MotoGP rider lifestyle. He simply was not sucked in by the fame. He did not need the approval of others to form his own view of himself.

Stoner is absolutely a legend of this sport and many including myself think he is simply a legend.

Stoner was one of those riders who I was conflicted on, I didn't want to like him but I did end up liking him. As for the suggestions by a lot of people over the years that he's not a "fighter" on track, he is or should I say he was, he had plenty of wheel to wheel battles in the 2-stroke classes, and had his fair share in the MotoGP class too. A bit highly strung but nobody is perfect are they?

Well, I voted for Steady Eddie Lawson because he is a local guy (I live in L.A.) and was a VERY determined racer---I've had the privilege of working with Freddie Spencer (one of my very best friends was Freddie's Superbike turner)---met Ago several times---perfect gentleman---have seen many of the people on the list race (yeah, I'm old!)---very hard choice to make...

how can you have a legends without Rossi, a living legend...

Useronly, by the look of things Rossi may be the only rider you know in MotoGP which is fine. Check it out though because there are a few others.

The big thing you may have missed (which can be excused because you probably have never noticed other riders) is that being a 'Legend' requires you to be retired. I am quite sure that Rossi is still a current rider and therefore can not be on the 'Legend' list yet.

Why do you have to be derogatory, Rossi is not the only rider I know of, which is what I assume you mean, I don't actually know Rossi or any others.

And there is nothing that says you have to be retired to be a legend.
If it doesn't depend on achievement then it is an incorrect concept.

Cheers
