5-6  podiums and a couple of wins but still 4th in championship, or does he have to finish top 3 ?

Throughout this whole ordeal when Lorenzo first came on board with Yamaha, Rossi's ego driven hissy fit and departure to Ducati, then his eventual return, Lorenzo has taken the high road when it comes to  the subject of his teammate. It must be humbling for Rossi to have his teamamte coddle and encourage him like he is a rookie, pleading with him to pick up his game and give some help

I think he would need not only need to win 4-5 races, but also run consistently with the top 3 riders. Some of his race wins should also come after out-smarting Marquez or Lorenzo in the final laps.

I saw the picture below while reading a Mat Oxley editorial on www.motorsportmagazine.com . I've been away for a while, so maybe this has already been discussed, but the pic startled me because it didn't look like Rossi at all. The lean angle. The way he hangs off the bike. I always knew Rossi to use less-than-extreme lean angles and to keep his body in line with the bike. Looks like he is pushing hard to change his game and keep up.

I said the same thing when I saw that pic. Elbow scraping and huge lean angles are the name of the game now, especially on the M1. It's good to see Rossi trying to adapt.

I think a "big year" for Rossi would be something like three wins and enough podiums to keep pace with Dani in the standings. That's probably the ceiling of his ability right now.

That would certainly be an improvement, but I think anything short of showing he can still challenge for the title would be a disappointment. Someone's with Rossi's history shouldn't aspire for anything less than that.

Agree 100%, which is why I think he's going to retire after this year. I don't know how long his ego will allow him to be JLo's sidekick.

Announcing his defection to WSBK!  Now that Eze has control they can manipulate it like the old days to give him a chance of winning.

big season = be at  least as close to #99 this time as jorge was  to him in 09.

agree  with  rez and shupes comments,  maybe shaking things up in his garage  is what was needed to step up his game once more

Photoshop?

at least a couple wins, and consistently see him on the podium, but also winning battles on track against Dani and MM

IMO, he has to be within touching distance of Lorenzo at season's end (withing say 20 points) and must beat at least one of the remaining two 'aliens), so at worst third in the championship with three or so race wins.

Anything less and it has been a failed year.

I look at it this way: Rossi's goal for 2014 is to get another fat Factory Yamaha contract for 2015 and 2016. The passing grade for that outcome is to be the 4th best rider in MotoGP by some distance from the 5th. Therefore the titular 'Big Season' for Rossi is 3rd or better.

Rossi's goal for 2014 is to get factory ride offers for 2015 and 2016. One from Yamaha and the other from Suzuki....and if he can get a win or two and plenty of podiums in 2014 then he's happy.

Rossi's cabana boy will get paid more than a Factory Suzuki GP rider. They are legendary cheapskates and will never pay for someone of Rossi's enterprise grade venality.

Big Jorge

Finishing ahead of Jorge at least once when they both complete the race.

And when Jorge's healthy. Vale finished ahead of JLo at Assen last year, only because Lorenzo's collarbone had to be stapled back together so he could race.

Not a big season but minimal result to not be a waste of space would be a top 3 finish in the final leader board.
