Team Mate battles

Okay, I've been thinking this one over (it was Thursday night and maybe it should have gone on the pissed thread)

BUT

The cardinal rule of racing is always beat your team mate first, then worry about the other mundane stuff like winning and Points.

Now Jumkie started this by giving a great Link of the Double Ducati Podium and Phillip Island from 2010, Hayden was riding the wheels off it and made the bike look damn good, Casey won the race and Rossi 2nd but Nicky could obviously handle the Poocati.

The first thing that came to mind was the Hayden may be able to beat Rossi this year.

Then I looked at Ben, whose average times on extended runs at Sepang were better than Jorge's, and in fact better than many of the vaunted Honda's.

And then there is the desperate and dateless Dani, whom an amount of money equivalent to the Australian GDP has been spent upon since Hayden left to buy him a title, and now Casey is there.

So this is not Rossi -v- Stoner as many of the threads are but the team placings. I have mentioned three as a warm up, but this does not set the paramters or terms, all the teams are worthy of a mention.

For me the three teams mentioned I am going to vote Stoner Spies and Hayden (not that there is a pole, I'm not technical enough).

I think Stoner is a world champion and has done it before, Dani is the perennial lady in waiting.

I think Spies on his extended runs showed he could settle into a better race rhythm

I think Hayden can ride that Ducati and his style is better suited to the turning difficulties the bike has (as opposed to the more in line style of Rossi)

Let the fight begin!

Spies reminds me a lot of Rainey in his supremely methodical approach. You would be foolish to count him out.

If Spies constantly beats Lorenzo and Lorenzo does not try to build a wall, it will affirm what I think of him already. Lorenzo is pretty methodical according to KRSR.

If Hayden constantly beats Rossi, Hayden should be the one building the wall. (Although he won't as he is a 'team player')

Pedrosa is a bridesmaid, literally.

Continuing on with my own thread...

Firstly - I have never underestimated RDP - at 6th fastest on the Ducati and not the rider that Rossi or Hayden is it would demonstrate that the GP11 is not the equal of the satellite bikes.

Stoner - Fastest Honda (well they got him for that reason)

Ben Spies - Fastest Yamaha - this is an omen for Lorenzo - it happened last test and average speeds for Spies are right up there.

Nicky - wait for the wall if you keep doing that. Valentino will get the chance to alienate much of his USA fan base by doing some bitching soon enough.

Toni Elias - built for a smaller bike - somebody has to come last though

So I guess Suzuki doesnt have to worry about team battles, LOL. They just need to win, hahaha. Seriously, this year could/should be very interesting as it plays out. I for one will love every second of Spies handing it to his teammate, even if it doesnt happen, hes really shown some solid improvement, he just needs to stay healthy.

I think Stoner is going to own the show at Honda, if he can keep it up, but as testing has gone he's showed he can do it. Its not like he's tossed several Honda's thus far.

At the end of the day, I sure wish the grid was a bit larger, a few more riders/manufacturers wouldnt hurt. I really would love to see BMW/ Aprilla/ KTM all in on MotoGP.

I think the Honda team battle will be interesting. I will give Stoner the edge at the moment.

Normally I'd agree with that, but everyone knows how fast that Pedrobot is to the hole-shot.

Frightening.

yeah Pedrobot is very fast out of the hole, but unless the guy did some serious full race simulations I dont think he'll be able to keep pace for a full race. That's kinda been MO for a while now, he lacks stamina or something to keep pace. Who knows Im sure he suffers a few reboots during the race and probably has problems loading up the pass app. perhaps they need to test his connection speed or try a whole new motherboard, who knows. IMO I think Pedro should be very worried, if Stoner does good on the Honda, then Honda is happy and they can shut down pedrobot and send him to the moon.

Frightening.

Fair point, but as Tikki has noted, full race distance could be suspect for Pedrosa. We've seen Pedrosa moon shot from the start last year only to be run down by Lorenzo, but that was 2010, 2011 could be a whole new animal.

Stoner and Pedrosa is by far the most interesting team mate battle as its the most open. The Gresini team battle might be pretty good too.

As for Spies and Lorenzo, we'll have to wait for some racing. Ben has clearly made a step forward and might become an 'alien' towards the second half of the year, but it will be hard to judge for a while unless he starts regularly winning races. He may appear to have bettered Lorenzo in testing but based on actual race pace he has only really better Jorge on the second day of Qatar testing when the champion was testing a swingwarm and having a mare with the wind. Jorge has been riding alongside Rossi for a few years he isn't going to panic any time soon if Spies gets a few better results, after the summer break things might get serious though.
