Taking advantage of the red flag?

I have to admit I haven't watched all the AMA superbike races this year but in two instances I have seen what I suspect is the series leaders (Spies and Mladin) take advantage of the red flag to get back in the race.

Situation 1 - Mladin goes down in a corner at the Utah race, lays there and looks hurt, waits for the medics to come out, this results in a red flag (race stopped). He then has time to have his bike fixed and get back in the race. Which allows him to pick up valuable points.

Situation 2 - Spies goes down in a corner at Road Atlanta. Pretty much same as Mladin he lays on the track and a red flag results. He is then able to get back into the race and pick up points.

My question is, and maybe this has been discussed before, but are these guys purposefully taking advantage of the red flag? Pretending to be badly hurt, then more or less having the race stopped for them so they can get back in the action and at least pick up some points? I never see this happen in WSBK or Moto GP, in those series medics around the track will haul you off quickly and the race goes on with maybe a yellow flag. Just my observation, curious what you guys think?

yes this seems like takin advantage to me also.

seems the ama throw the damn red flag at the drop of a hat. it's ........! the same ........ they pull in nascrap to keep the race close. well spies will be goin to gps soon & that crap won't work.

It is an interesting rule to say the least as there is no penalty for thr rider or riders deemed to have caused the stoppage.

As an example, in Australia the rider deemed to have caused the Red Flag (ie. the rider laying on the track) cannot restart the race once the Red Flag has been issued.

The problem is not so much with the riders as in a professional sport the athlete should take advantage of whatever rule

Well personally i dont think this is taking advantage.. I wouldn't risk my life laying in the middle of a superbike race just for a couple of points... especially not after that hidious marshall crash a couple of years ago.. where there weren't no flags issued!

At least the americans have started to learn how to use incident flags..

As much as I respect a man with dignity, dignity is dead. Of course they are taking advantage of the rules. The AMA needs to DQ people who draw the red flag.

Yes. And as you can see, it worked.

One minutue they are so badly "hurt" that they can't manage to get to their feet, the next minute they are leading the restart. I think if you cause the red flag you should at least have a drive through medical exam/penalty by a doctor to check to see if you really are healthy enough to race so as not to put other riders at risk.

Like I said in another thread Silly and Fixed American racing series...why anyone takes AMA racing seriously is a mystery to me?
