Suzuki silent on one-bike plan

Suzuki has so far ignored requests from Dorna to clarify its position on the number of bikes it will field in the 2011 MotoGP world championship.

The Japanese factory first informed the Spanish rights holders of its intention to reduce its involvement to one bike in 2011 back in June.

Suzuki boss Shinichi Sahara then confirmed the plan in an interview with MCN at the Misano round in early September.

Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta held talks with Suzuki management at the recent Twin Ring Motegi race in Japan.

As a result, Ezpeleta sent a letter to Japanese management on October 6 requesting Suzuki to clarify its position on 2011.

But he confirmed to MCN that the correspondence had met with no reaction.

“We have not heard anything, “said Ezpeleta.

“They have not replied. When we finally get an answer we will decide what the next action will be.”

Ezpeleta has threatened legal action against Suzuki believing they are obliged by the terms of a five-year agreement to field two bikes until the end of 2011. Dorna's view is also shared by the other members of the powerful Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers Association including Yamaha, Honda and Ducati.

But Suzuki is blaming the impact of the economic crisis on its decision to downsize to one factory GSV-R.

Ezpeleta added: “For me it doesn’t matter what they say. I’ve got an agreement with them but I am not chasing them for an answer.”

Ezpeleta said he would wait until after the final round in Valencia this weekend before deciding what action to take next.

Suzuki poised to confirm one-bike plan

Suzuki will officially confirm it will reduce its involvement in the 2011 MotoGP world championship to just one bike after tomorrow’s final race in Valencia.

A statement is expected to be released from Japan either late tomorrow (Sunday) or early Monday morning with Suzuki planning to field only one factory GSV-R next season.

Suzuki first informed the Spanish rights holders of its intention to reduce its involvement to one bike in 2011 back in June.

Suzuki boss Shinichi Sahara then confirmed the plan in an interview with MCN at the Misano round in early September.

Suzuki is blaming the impact of the economic crisis on its decision to downsize to one factory GSV-R.

A formal announcement confirming the plan is not likely to be the end of the matter with Dorna boss Carmelo Ezpeleta confirming he intends to take legal action if Suzuki went ahead with the plan to slash its involvement.

He believes Suzuki is bound by the terms of its agreement with the Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers Association to field two bikes in 2011.

But Suzuki is adamant that it will be fulfilling its commitment to participate next year, even its involvement is reduced to just one bike for Spanish rider Alvaro Bautista.

2010 has been a difficult year. It's hard to believe what has happened to the sport, and it's even harder to process the direction it will be taking in the future with the new 81mm 1000cc rules. It is not possible to get more uncool than fuel-limited and capacity-limited racing, Group C prototype racing proved it 20 years ago.

I hope Suzuki withdraw, and the FIM is forced to take a much different approach. Specifying engine dimensions other than displacement is a bad idea.

Suzuki’s longest serving Grand Prix team-member, Crew Chief Stuart Shenton, has left the squad after an amazing 19-year career with the Japanese marque.

Shenton and Suzuki parted company following the final race of the season at Valencia, after Suzuki confirmed its plans to field just one rider in next season’s MotoGP World Championship. The massively experienced Englishman began work in the motorcycle Grand Prix paddock in 1976 with Kawasaki, before moving to Honda in 1983. Shenton joined Suzuki in 1992 and has been chief engineer for many great Suzuki riders including, Kevin Schwantz, Sete Gibernau, John Hopkins, Loris Capirossi and numerous others in his illustrious career.

Due to Suzuki’s decision to operate a one-man team next season, several other members of the crew will join Shenton in leaving the squad. George Dziedzic, Richard Francis, Jeffrey Oh, Tsutomu Matsugano, Renato Pennacchio and Erkki Siukola will all be greatly missed following the re-structure for 2011.

Suzuki Motor Corporation would like to thank all of the departing crew-members for their years of service and wish all their ex-team-mates well in their new careers.
