Hi everybody at Moto GP Forum,

I am also an eager follower of MotoGP, one of the best sports around. Over the last couple of years I have been increasingly annoyed by all these TV shots from the pit of the team we have to look at at important moments during the race. So I wrote the letter below to Dorna, and I am posting here, to see if anybody else agrees with me and perhaps will also tell Dorna that their TV producers should do a better job.

(Btw.: I can highly recommend www.racing-underground.com if you for some reason are nearer a high speed internet connetion than a TV with the right channel, or just whant to relive a race)

Subject: To many shots of pit crew

Dear Dorna,

I watch most of the rounds of the MotoGP championship, which I enjoy very much. One thing irritates my a bit though, it is all these shots of the pit crew and team bosses and riders girlfriends that you show during the races. Often when Rossi or Stoner has passed the leader, you immediately cut to a picture of the crew cheering, sometimes there is also a shot of the fans (much better). Also whenever somebody falls of, we have to look at his crew making gestures of "that's to bad, hope he is ok". A prime example was in the 125 race at Motegi last weekend where Mike De Meglio fell down from 2nd place, at this point it is very interesting to see in which position he rejoins, number 4 or 6, but no no, we had to look at the pit crew again.

When following the races on Eurosport, as many of us do, you also notice that a lot of the commentators all over Europe are annoyed with this, they say things like "let's switch back to the racing", "if we could get a shot of that". Of course everybody agrees that we want to see the passing action, and it can be difficult to prioritize which riders and battles should be in focus, but the easiest way of making sure we don't miss to much, is to cut down on all these shots of the team and crew. After all this is not a soap opera, most of us watch because we find the racing interesting in itself we don't need to look at other people who also find it interesting, in order to know that it is. Shots of the crew was invented in F1, where it makes better sense because of their pit stops, and because there is usually no action at all on the race track, let's leave it to them, and if they must be in MotoGP, they should only be shown in periods of low action on track.

Yours sincerely,

To be honest I'm more worried about cameras on the start/finish line. More often than not these days they miss the actual crossing of the finish line by cutting between two cameras. It's almost unforgivable.

I love all the crew/GF/wife/hangersoners shots, thats part of the racing these days!!

Hell I don't know I'd feel half as good as I do for the Ducati Team if I had not seen the reactions in the pits. Its good to watch them go off their faces.

And the family stuff is worthwhile .. its like they know they have a mission to ignore the cameras but some of em can't help cracking. Stoners young lady is a classic LOL ... and I wouldn't wanna miss that young womans shy smile for quids.!!!

But then again maybe we don't see as much of the crew shots as you guys do.??

I think there right to show the team. There is no I in team.
They all work very hard to make that bike go well, and in the event of an incident they show concern? Whats wrong with that ?
Sometimes they make mistakes, and as you rightly say thet miss things, but thats live TV.

I like those camera shots, they help include the viewer in the emotions that are poured into the sport. Top Stuff.

Ok, it's just me who have an unusual taste in motorcycle TV production then I think, just hope Dorna aren't reading this board, they will start putting even more pit crew shots in then :)

The Dorna camera work for some reason doesn't give you a great impression of the speed these bikes a going at. If you look at the thread about the Suzuki/Yamaha prototypes there is an amateur video link. This is actually better than the motogp filming with real sound and the speed looks totally different. A lot of times this is because of zooming that the rate of zoom distorts the rate of the motorcycle. I think the sound is mixed and not really relevant to the action shown. For sure the sound could be much much better. There is just a white noise of machines and nothing specific.

the sound could defo do with improving , moto gp bikes sound nothing like they do at the track.

I totally agree with you ,its infuriating to have to watch a pit crews reaction when your missing the action on the track, also we dont need to see so many shots of Rossi's arse.

sometimes i like to see the crews reaction to something - like pedrobot wiping out his team mate & championship leader
<
or the look on the Honda chiefs mush when Rossi took the M1 onto the top step at his first race.
<

things like that give you an insight into the world behind the scenes but I agree that everything has it's time and place. i have missed more crucial moments as a result of advertisements than anything else but they are a necessary evil i guess.

besides - i like getting the odd chance to perve on the riders wives

Hi Locks, I agree. Racing around the world could learn much from NASCAR, CHAMP and IRL. What they do is split the screen. That way those of us who want to see the soap opera of human drama and reaction can watch the crew go ape ...., while the purist can keep their eyes glued to the racing action. CHAMP car and IRL have also had innovative coverage in that they have continued the racing action while having a split screen of advertisements and commercials.

+1
Those are the guys that put in the really long hours, they deserve their 15 seconds of fame

I did think of a situation where someone does get peeved with the pit crew shots ...

a few times there they flash to a pit crew just sitting their watching the action on the in garage screen. They sit there and the camera zooms in and pans around them, the little girl sitting there ( obviously one of the Ducati crews family ) and she realises she's on TV so finally she stares right at the cameraman and smiles and waves LOL Again thats why I think its a positive I mean this is the top forula in moto racing and you get this insight into the construct and dynamics of a team. Hell I could have gone on all season thinking stoners Ducati crew were an elite goup of James Bond style, ski resort dwelling, champagne swilling, caviar munching dandies. But now I think they are a bunch of blokes/chics .. doing a good job, loving it, and are just as appreciative of how they are doing as the regular spectators are.

Yeah the pit crew must hate the shots of themselves, whilst they are in the garage trying to watch the action. Which beggers the question if even the pit crew use the live TV to watch the racing how worthwile is going there in person?? LOL

Well, they clearly can't see the whole track very well from the pit.

haha yeah I think I've seen her smile and wave too when she realises she's on .... but one round there was a mum and two kids in Stoners garage ( misano it was so I assumed they were family of one of the Duc. crew ) .... one of the kids it was that waved as if to say hey look I can see myself LOL

Yeah thats kinda what I meant ... for many spectators its lke that too .... I don't go to many races any more ( don't need the atmosphere/sounds anymore at my age LOL ) and I see more of the race sitting on my lounge in front of a big screen TV. I seem to be able to keep track of the actual race better too at home.

Easy, keep the action going and put a picture of the crew/gf/whatever in a corner of the screen. Best of both worlds.

I wish the broadcasts on the speed channel here in the states would have more pre and post race coverage to catch all the "soap opera" parts of racing. But that would mess up their nice and neat 1 hours slots per race.

no I agree with you! it annoys me too, they always show it at the wrong time during the race, and it lasts way to long
<
I agree with the 'there is no I in team', but they have to know when it's time to see the crew and when it's just not done to switch

hate it too when they switch to the mid-pack of the field when it's thrillingly exciting at the front, it's like getting a glass of water thrown in your face, and it kills the excitement

Its quite annoying the showing of racing down the pack but i believe Dorna did some deal because the sponsors where complaining about not getting a chance.

Also nice the first time seeing the riders wives but gets boring after a while
<

I don't mind seeing the mechanics etc to see what burgess is thinking and that funny little smiling dude at Honda who thinks Honda is gonna win then they don't
