Carter: Rossi to challenge Bayliss?...

Eurosport - Tue, 02 Dec 14:15:00 2008

Tony Carter wonders whether Valentino Rossi would really take on Troy Bayliss in a one-off World Superbike race.

How clever is Valentino Rossi?

He certainly is shrewd. Over the last couple of weeks the eight time World Champ has been out in action at a rally event, stirred up press speculation about his future with the odd quip about his remaining two years with Yamaha and taken to the track for some early 2009 testing.

And now, in an almost unreported on section of the Italian press, Valentino's gone and dropped probably his biggest bombshell to date.

Because, according to some race watchers over here, it's now been reported in Italian sporting publication Corriere dello Sport that Vale wants to race none other than Troy Bayliss in a one-off World Superbike scrap.

Blimey.

Here's what the publication has apparently run as direct quotes from Rossi himself: "If there was an opportunity and the right date then I would race there tomorrow. I like World Superbikes to be mad, I like to watch it and I'd love to ride in it, the problem is the dates.

"I do not know when, but I hope that I can make a race in WSB. I am sad that I would not be able to race against Bayliss on track now because I would like to challenge him on a superbike. Maybe, if I ask him he might even come back for one race for the challenge."

The magazine also goes on to quote Ducati Xerox Team Boss David Tardozzi as saying: "We like this idea, but will Rossi really race in Superbike? Bayliss is ready."

I think David's reticence about the idea is pretty spot on. Would Rossi really come to WSB for a one-off race against Bayliss? Vale on the R1 versus Troy on the 1098?

Let's not lose sight of the fact that it would be a thing of legend in terms of motorcycle racing. One of those events and races that every race fan around the world would talk about forever.

But, like David said, would Valentino really go and race in WSB?

Surely he doesn't feel the need to. He can't honestly think he has anything left to prove on two wheels, does he?

Let's assume that he's not mulling over the idea to prove anything to anyone then, let's take a look at the bigger picture.

Why would Rossi say these things? What could he hope to achieve? Has he been so starved of good, manic, close-quarter racing in recent MotoGP years that the elbows-out nature of WSB is starting to pull him towards the series?

Is there another motive for saying these things at all?

Maybe. It's still early days yet as far as the 2009 MotoGP season goes, but we're already out of the new season's starter blocks as far as rider's mind games go.

And maybe this is just a really nice bluff put up by the king to just knock his rivals off their stride a little bit. Every time they think they have a handle on him and can adjust and tighten up their own attacks accordingly, Rossi the master throws them a curve ball.

Good tactic to use.

Mind you, if it's not mind games and he really does want to race Bayliss at a WSB round soon then do what you have to so that you can get trackside because that one race will be amazing.

Rossi would hand Bayliss his ......
<

I've been saying for years....he's not gonna go to F1 or WRC...he's gonna do WSBK...

Rossi has proved he doesn't mind putting it on the line when he went from Honda to Yamaha. As skeptical as I am, I can't say I would be surprised if Rossi did push for something like this.

It surely would be a fantastic event.

Rossi and Bayliss racing a weekend at one of the following circuits:

1. P.I.
2. Assen
3. Donington
4. Misano
5. Brno

Both would have track knowledge. Bayliss on a factory Duc (along with Haga and Fabrizio) and Rossi on the new M1 (with Spies and Sykes). dun dun DUNNNNN !!!!

That would be some serious fodder for debate.

Rossi and Spies on the same bike and track at the same time? Can you imagine pages of name calling we'd get out of that? Hell, we still drag up Hayden years later.

Haga and Bayliss on the same bike and track at the same time? Hmmmm...

I would love to see this (Who wouldn't?!!?), but I see this coming to reality a bit slim. But hey, it would be awesome!

Make it happen Rossi!

Here is what would be awesome. An IROC event for the bike racing world.Take the top 4 finishers from every major series
Moto Gp
Gp 250's
WSBK
AMA
BSB and so on.Put them on identically prepared whatever's and have a race day.Give the riders 2 one hour test sessions and allow geometry changes only with the parts that came on the bike.Have a 30 minute qualifying session and 2 100k races.Compact that into a 5 hour pay per view event. What would you pay to see that.It would make millions on millions

I would pay $$$ to see that.
That would put a lot of questions to bed. (AMA sucks vs BSB).

That's what I was thinking.
But.... gee what a concept.....

I have thought about htis for some time now. Throw them all on 600's (too bad their contracts wouldn't let them right another manufacture)

You could put them on stock 600's or 1000's of the brand of their contract. Those bikes are so close in performance, the rider will make the difference anyway.Go basically with stock bikes with aftermarket pipes,PC and slicks, thats it.Set it up how you like it, or as close to, using stock everything on suspension.I would easily pay 100.00 dollars to watch that.

Frost, I'm not much of a cultured man, but isn't it too early for the Italians to be telling April Fools jokes?

(Either way, my money would be on Bayliss, hands down.)

Well Sacky, that actually might be easier than you think. All you have to do is convince the banker posing as our treasury secretary that a billion to you would "stimulate" the economy, and bam, check in the mail. Then we could all see Bayliss school Rossi on a man's bike.

A concept like that would be just too good to be true

At the end of his MotoGP Yamaka contract could you see Rossi switching to WSBK and Ducati?
To have WC on multiple manufacturers in multiple championships would make him even harder to surpass in the future.

I'm with you Frosty. This is good old fashioned Italian tabloid trash. I wouldn't be surprised if this entire article is completely made up.

In the off chance there is some truth to this rumor, or this story is being floated to the public to find out how it is received, I agree with Sack. If Rossi races Bayliss in a 1 off (maybe Schumacher will join in
<
) I would have to conclude that Rossi is hurting for money.
