Are they really important to a rider? for the fans its a kind of recognition. Whenever i see the no46 i always think of Mr Rossi, the no41 i always think of Noriyuki Haga. Why do they have them? Rossi has no46 because his dad Graziano used to use it in racing. When Neil Hodgson came to WSB he used the no100 because it represented his BSB title that he won in 2000.

Can anyone else shed any light on other riders no's?

Id like to know why Ben Bostrom has always used the no155? and why Troy bayliss stuck with the no21 for a while?

I believe it is superstition. These guys are all very superstitious. Some like to keep the number they had on their bike when they won their first race or first championship.

That's just my guess..

Nicky Hayden uses #69 because his dad used it.

His dad had the reputation of crashing the bike and he joked around saying "They can see who it is that crashed even if my bike is upside down." Hence the 69.

Absolutely right about Hayden there Xb.

Bostrom uses the 155 because he always was number 11 up through the ranks and when he made the jump to WSB I'm assuming 11 was taken because I remember him being quoted as saying "1+5+5=11".

Colin Edwards runs the number 5 because it was the number he used when he entered WSB with Yamaha.

Ok what about Jeremy McWilliams who I may add has been sacked from The Bird team in BSB.... riding 99

and of course Walker the Stalker running no. 9

That was when he moved to Castrol Honda, but then he went back to 5, then 2, then 1 and then 2 again.

Edwards started with the number 45. After finishing in the championship in 5th place he decided to change to 5. After finishing in 2nd place in the championship he changed to 2. After finishing 1st he changed to 1. Colin changed to 5 again because he finished 5th last seaon and wants to see if the superstition is right.

He changes his numbers as part of superstition for the most part and then I think he changed to 5 also to differentitate from the 45 and 46 on the Yamahas.

Max uses what ever number he finishes in the world championship. (just like Doohan did) and i think you will find its the same with Bayliss

Bayliss rides with 12 because it is 21 backwards, I still have no idea what his connection with 21 is but he finished 6th in points in 2003 and kept 12.

Max has stuck with 3 for some time now, even after finishing 2nd in the championship in 2001 and 2002.

Anyone know why Haga has the no41?

Also why did Neil Hodgson have the no50 last year? Was no100 already taken up? i dont think so... Did the no50 have any relevance to his previous no100?

This is just a guess so take it with a grain of salt. My assumption would be the powers that be in MotoGP have made some sort of regulation that restricts riders numbers from 1-99. As to why he chose 50 I have no idea, I would assume it is because it is a divisible of 100. Just a guess though.

no he took #2

Nice topic

Marco Melandri has 33 cause it seems like two M reversed.
Andrea Dovizioso has 34 cause it was Kewin Shwantz's number.

Did anyone know why James Toseland have 52?
