Rider Appreciation Thread

This is a motogp rider appreciation thread.

Going first. I always will remember and appreciate Wayne Gardner. He was the reason 500cc was first televised in Australia, in conjunction but often delay from F1 races, which I also loved. Anything with speed. I used to set the VCR recorder if it was too late for school. He came from the gong, as in Wollongong, just south of Sydney in NSW.

By coincidence that’s where I lived. As a kid att I was truly fascinated. What are these crazy sounding bikes? It was instantly recognisable even on TV they were going very, very fast and often seemingly out of control.

I also remember Daryl Eastlake, for good and bad reasons. He was loud, but enthusiastic. They needed someone to promote the sport and he was in reality a big proponent of that. You could tell he loved it. Barry Sheene also, or probably more so, a really great rider and then commentator on Aus TV.

I left out other riders most notably Doohan, my all time fav, but Gardner came first. Actually I acutely remember Kevin Schwantz on the Suzuki in 1988, alas I could go on forever so on to others.

RIP to all riders lost. Live forever in our hearts and memories.

Very similar to my path, although I am older and probably followed car racing for longer before I got into bike racing.
