Race car project

Its an R6 engine, i think from about 2005 but it runs with an intake diameter restriction so i think its somewhere in the region of 75 BHP, not exactly sure. The whole thing weighs a few sugar packets over 200 kg with a final drive that sees it go about 90 so it gets there pretty quick.

Is the intake restricted due to the race series rules ? I would expect it goes well if you keep the revs up.

You said you're shipping it to Cali? Where? What track to do you plan to run it at?

In the picture of the car in BR Green with people stood around it i'm the one in the grey hoody with the hood up. In the picture of a few people working on the white chassis i'm the one with my head up its arse.

It's a university project yea, it makes up half of our 4th year. Basically about 15 of us in 3 departments design, build and run the car at a competition each year. Usually its one car per season but we are on a two season cycle at the moment so this generation was at Silverstone last June and we have been responsible for basically tarting it up a bit and sending it to SAE West this summer while doing the conceptual design for the next generation simultaneously. I think its racing at Fontana, but we don't run on full size circuits or proper wheel to wheel racing. There are a few different events designed basically to test the car, coned out sections and things of that nature.

Dude I live 20 minutes from that track (Its called AutoClub Speedway). That's where the 2d AMA round is held. They have a kart track in the parking lot. Let me know when its there and I'll go out and take a look.

Here have a look at this for more information, we'll be the only British team there so we should be easy to spot. The autocross even is Friday afternoon and the endurance event is Saturday, spectating wise they should be the most entertaining.

Just put it into my calendar. Will take a pic next to your car.

Ok dude, I'm gonna go check out your car tomorrow or next day. Who should I talk to? Give me names.

Yea man its still on as far as i know. The car and team are out there, but i haven't actually spoken to any of them, so if you go down there you'll know more than i do!

Im here in Fontana with the car crew from Leeds. Real nice guys, im starting to understand why Tom is not here with them. Got some great dirt on Tom. Will post pics and details later. Blahaha.

How did we do?

How did we do?

Well, i'll tell ya, the Leeds team was challenging all the top cars, even the race favorites, but then something happened. Talking to the boys, i was informed that the various members of the team wer responsible for different aspects of the car. Turns out the part of the car u touched Tom was the only system that failed. Unfortunately the car sputtered during the last few laps. I'll giv u the full report when i get home as i am out of the country atm. Im sure ur buddies will ring ur neck when they get home. Lucky for u i tried to soften the disappointing situation with a fresh cold supply of Tecate beer after the race. Hahaha.

Formula SAE results: LINK

University of Leeds:

Overall: 11th place out of 50 entries; Excellent!

(Would have done better but thanks to Tom's part in all this, the car got a DNF in the Skid Pad part of the competition).

So what broke?

The part you touched. So you should know.

(I know you think I'm bullshitting you, but really, the part you touched failed, at least that's what the consensus was amongst the crew).

Here is a pic with the boys. Like I said, a great crew. The hats they are wearing are Rockstar hats I gave them. I also brought them cans of the energy drink to give them a little pick me up.

They let me sit in the car. Perhaps had I driven the thing they may have finished higher up the order, eh.

I just spoke to one of the lads, apparently the gear shifter broke. That was my departments responsibility but not a component i actually had an active role in. Still it was never going to go perfectly and it sounds as though the guys coped well

Yes indeed, I'm starting to wonder what you had an active role in actually. Talking to the crew, its sounded like you are a bit lazy. When I asked them about you they looked at eachother, with a bit of hesitation, I told them not to worry, I don't personally know Tom, he's just a guy I school on a bike forum. Ah, well, then, this put them at ease a bit, then they admitted, "oh Tom, yeah, he's the bloke that likes to sleep in."

Here are the boys drinking Rockstar energy drinks. Ah but that wasn't the only thing, seeing their frustration at a DNF in the Skid pad portion of the competition, I went out and got them all Tecate beer. It was a hot day, but the beer was frost cold as hell. That's when their tongues loosed up a bit a gave me more dirt about you Tom.
