Since there are a few tech heads and car fans around here i thought i'd put up a few pictures of our Formula Student car before we ship it off to California for the competition this summer

This is the car last autumn at a small shakedown test to see how it ran after last summers competition and set out our targets for the year

And this is testing this morning... Or us trying to bleed brakes, sort fuel maps and get data aquisition up and running shortly before testing this morning.

And a couple we took of the new paintjob, it was a shame to move away from British racing green, but everyone was happy with how its turned out. Despite not shedding a lot of weight since last year we've got it running much better and its already quicker

That's the same as Formula SAE right?

I did a few runs with a local college.

Crazy fun car. Tons of understeer, but could blast through the course we set up in the nearby parking lot.

I have a buddy who raced the Columbia University car a few times back in '08.

Yea man, we are entering Formula SAE west this June. That car looks wicked, i'm gonna spy on their website as much as i can right now
<
YOu know a lot about the build or key features?

Not a clue.

From there site:

I do know the driver they have was a foot shorter than I, and they had to redo the whole front end to make me fit.

Hey, come up to Putnam Park in Indiana, as a few buddies and I are running my FBMW car in two weeks.

A cracked tub (not a bad track but tightens it up too much) is keeping me from selling it.

If you're keeping it for fun and track days HF rip out the k1200 lump and put a suzuki gsxr1300 lump in it. Be fun then

Had 2 of them. The other I sold to EuroInternational, and is a spare for Carlos Sainz Jr. and Michael Lewis.

Tom, not sure if you have taken a spin in the car, but could you tell me about the front end. How much win buffering are you guys suffering from?

Is this a typo or a phrase i'm not familiar with? We certainly don't win anything

Yes, assuming you mean wind buffeting then i can't say anyone has complained or mentioned it, but i don't think we've run on a particularly windy day.

Wind, yes, a typo. Something that happens often on my phone.

How much buffering around the helmet?

Can I have a go?? Next time i'm in the US? Always wanted to test one!I'll answer your wind question with my superkart in a few weeks!

Not driven it myself but i've not heard a wisper of anything like that. I don't think we've run the car especially fast, the space we have at the airfield we're testing at doesn't really let the car stretch its legs for any length of time.

First of all, very cool Tom. So which one is you in the pics?

Also the new paint livery is much cooler with that UK flag on the side and the stripes on the nose.

What's the deal on this, is this a university project?

You said you're shipping it to Cali? Where? What track to do you plan to run it at?

In the picture of the car in BR Green with people stood around it i'm the one in the grey hoody with the hood up. In the picture of a few people working on the white chassis i'm the one with my head up its arse.

It's a university project yea, it makes up half of our 4th year. Basically about 15 of us in 3 departments design, build and run the car at a competition each year. Usually its one car per season but we are on a two season cycle at the moment so this generation was at Silverstone last June and we have been responsible for basically tarting it up a bit and sending it to SAE West this summer while doing the conceptual design for the next generation simultaneously. I think its racing at Fontana, but we don't run on full size circuits or proper wheel to wheel racing. There are a few different events designed basically to test the car, coned out sections and things of that nature.

Thats a pretty cool project tom, i remember back in the day we did an MZ racing project which was fun. What engine do you have in that ? Gimi some specs !

Its an R6 engine, i think from about 2005 but it runs with an intake diameter restriction so i think its somewhere in the region of 75 BHP, not exactly sure. The whole thing weighs a few sugar packets over 200 kg with a final drive that sees it go about 90 so it gets there pretty quick.
