Puig slams "stagnating" 250s

Both motogp.com and eurosport have
stories about Puig criticising the standard of the 250s after
rookies like bautista and Kallio have upstaged some of the more
experienced men...

To me this is a ridiculous thing to say and he couldn't be further
from the truth. This year is one of the strongest 250 grids and the
success of Bautista and others is down to their ability not a
stagnation in the class! In saying that he is seriously
undermining the ability of Lollipop, dovi, bautista etc - the future
of...

...MotoGP! Is this an intelligent, unbiased opinion from a "respected puig" that is giving us an insight into things from close up that we cannot tell from the outside or is he so blinded by pedrosa that nothing can compare to his abilities? That for example it could be that Bautista is better than Pedrosa and so he wants to play down the future competition.

I may have gone away from the point there? Lets discuss Puig's demeaning of the 250s...

i dont know about the talent stagnating but up until this year i didnt watch the 250's, i think i watched two- maybe three- last year because they were so boring with lorenzo just pulverising the field. its good that he's talented (he's the one rider that puig cant include in his statement) but it made boring racing.

however, this year is better. dovi has upped the pace and bautista is giving jorge a run for his money as well. i think puig confused 'stagnating' with 'boring' about last year, but this year i dont know where he's coming from at all.

Pirkkalan GP i think youre right in saying he may be trying to play down the future opposition with the whole bautista/ pedrosa thing because i think it may be true, bautista shows more promise IMO although puig will just look stupid if it turns out that he does end up kicking dani's ... so to speak.

the more i hear from puig the less i respect him, especially after portugal last year, the man is either dilusional or on something.

Oops should i have just ignored it then?

LET BATTLE COMMENCE....

PEDROSA, D Circuit Record (2004)
1'47"302

PEDROSA, D Pole Position Record (2005)
1'46"238

How will the stagnated class of 2007 compare....

We'll see come qualifying and race day....

(four under circuit record in FP1 + Bautista 0.3 outside pole record)
(anyone got an educated opinion on how much time improvement the bikes, being 2/3 years newer, should give?)

I'm having fun comparing 2004/5 and the current 250s here.....

Half way through Round 1 and although looking pretty even the current stagnatents are edging ahead with 3 riders under pedrosa's pole record and the top 6 all under 1'47 where as in 04/05 there were 3/4 under 1'47.

I expect more to get under the 1'47 barrier. I think if that top six get under pedrosa's best and the top 10 under 1'47 Puig will have comprehensively been beaten in round 1 by the 250s.

Btw. Was that lorenzo that held Kallio up on his flyer? (I was watching from a distance so couldn't see - just noticed red bike)

This year they've been smashing all records on previous races. Well, I didn't check but the pace this year has been commented several times.

Often race pace are araound previous lap record and new record about a second under previous record.

Medicore field, think not.

Round 1

12 under 1'37 compared to only 2 in 2006 3 in 2004 and 4 in 2005 suggests there's no stagnation!!

As for Pedrosa v 250s. 3 beat his pole time so that could be put down to bike improvements...except perhaps Lorenzo - miles under!!! 1.2sec.

Puig maybe right that only a few riders will be good enough for the 800cc class - going on qualifying there's no way he can argue the depth of the 250s is poor and has stagnated. lol

BTW...14 quicker than a certain Casey Stoner in 2005. But anyway...this is just one isolated event and a demonstration of how statistics can be used to show whatever you want

Puig is a mouthpiece, he must have his reasons for going on the record with such a brash and obviously unfounded statement. I don't know enough about the politics in 250GP's to even begin to reason why he would say it, but I'd hazzard a guess it's to piss someone off, Lorenzo perhaps? .... I don't know

I think Puig is making an effort to diffuse a bit of the hype surrounding the spaniards in 250 (Bautista and Loreno mainly) because they are getting more coverage than Dani, who has been quiet recently. The 250 class has one of the most competative fields its had for a while, but the japanease riders in particular have slumped a bit this year, which makes the rookie upset perhaps appear greater. I wouldn't say the class has stagnated though, but rather it is so competative that it moves forward very quickly. Pedrosa won as a rookie afterall.

i dunno tom, i think 125's and 250's have always been more popular in spain than the main event, puig is probably a laughing stock there for talking such ......

Yeah what's the deal with that?

Atleast we'll actually get to see all of the Motogp podium and interviews on Eurosport.

I think Ant Wests domination of WSS shows that the level of talent in the 250cc class really is far less than stagnant, even though Ant never really had the chance to shine in the 250s that he would have liked!

People go home after motogp race and the traffic will ease out more gently because some (me) will stay for all the races. I thinks its crap though because i love the usual build up and the 125's will feel like an anti climax after motogp, not to mention all the people scrambling for the exits while i'm trying to watch the race.
