With only 18 contenders, is there really any reason to continue awarding points all the way down to the 15th rider?

Not to deny all the hardwork these guys put in but this is not a game where you get a trophy just for participation. Until a time where we can get more than 25 riders on the grid, points positions should be restricted to either the top 10 or 2/3 of the grid.

No?

Good point. It does make it a bit of a farce when you get points for just finishing. But would a rule that only awarded points for the top 10 attract new smaller teams to join ?

That really depends on what the points do doesn't it?

Do you earn $X for X points?
Or is it just a way to sort the hierachy?

The top 3 obviously get some kind of price money, probably the top 5. The top 10 may get some kind of performance bonus from the teams. What happens to the rest?

Of course, if we made it too drastic and the bottom 5 or so riders never earn any points, how do you rank them then?

I'm all for change, but as soon as the grid gets bigger, DORNA will have to modify the points again.

Keeping track of career points is an interesting stat, imo. If the governing body changed the points table, it would be difficult to compare riders to one another via quantitative analysis.

i don know if its a myth but i was once told that if you score a point your travelling expense are paid . could be total bollocks though.

Disagree. I think its fine the way it is. You would in effect make DNFs for contenders when they had a bad day or a minor mistake in a race. This would make the championship hinge on a minor mistake rather than consistent success.
