Two questions, i wanna ask really.
why have riders come to running the numbers they do, ie why does loris always run 65, shinya 56, hopkins 21 etc. is it all supersticious reasons or what?

secondly, why is no rider allowed to have a 3 digit number?

Marketing.... the riders use this number to identify themselves with the spectators/audience. Some like their number, some believe it is their lucky number!

It may be a rule of the "Sup Regs". Some forms of motorcycle racing allow 3 digit numbers.

I just wanna know why you can't have decimals, roman numerals, or irrational numbers.

Sadly, I know my dream will never come true........ because the FIM will never allow radical number expressions.

More often than not I think that it's usually the first racing number they get & they stick with it, or as in Vale's case... 46 was his father's number (I think?)

As for the 3 digits, well I'm not sure about MotoGP but I do know that Aaron Slight raced at least one season in WSBK with the number "111". This was because Fogarty had the number 1 & Corser had already stiched up number 11!

I think for the most part they pick a number that they associate with whether it be their favorite number, a lucky number to them, or perhaps to pay respect to somebody who ran the number preciously. I don't think there is a rule against triple digit numbers. I know for a fact I've seen three digit numbers in WSBK. I heard a commentator say that Al Puig picked Elias' (24), Pedrosa's(26), and Stoner's (27) numbers. This is why they are consecutive. I wonder who the 25 was meant for if this is true. I know that Nicky Hayden runs the 69 because that was his dad's number.

didnt neil hodgson run #100 when he was on the d'antin ducati?

or was he using a different no.?

if there is a "digit" rule, its probably got something to do with marketing reg's or else how many people would want to run 666....

exactly, if you were forever changing it and your colour scheme then you'd be harder to identify

they do, didnt xaus run 111?
 
too bad letter cant be incorporated. otherwise rossi would have "SORE LOSER" as his plate.

maybe he'll have it on the fairings

Hodgson ran 50, with a 100 inside it.
 
I thought they got to pick from the numbers available usually the lower the better.

Unless they have some attachment to a specific number... i can only thing of Rossi here with the 46 and Chris has been wanting the 7 for years.

Wow, that's cool man. I enjoyed watching him here in the AMA. He earned some fans here. He had a great showing the last race of the season to impress the Japanese bosses. Its too bad Ducati were hindered from really competing here in the States because I think he was a great guy for the job.
