It's a French word ......... [emoji12]
The Oxford dictionary doesn't take a position, it simply reports the regional (mis)usage.
Before you take a position on it, consult the French dictionary.

Gordon Ramsay needs a kick in the arse for, among other things, indulging that .........

It's also defining what the word means...which is what dictionaries do.

I addressed that portion of Kropo's post.

The dictionary defines it the way I mentioned in the post above, therefore the usage of it as a main course meal in North America is correct.

Boom.

You got me: as we all know, putting the word "boom" at the end of your argument makes it irrefutable.

Dammit!! Why didn't I think of that.

Although I would add that the dictionary doesn't define any ....... thing, as I mentioned in my previous post. But yeh, my bad for not referencing Disney characters in order to splain it proper like...

Oh come on Cool. JP simply posted the meaning of the word based on an overwhelmingly accepted book that defines words. Ironically you're using the same supposed authority of definitions for you to make the case 'that dictionary' is wrong? "Misusage".

So let's recap, according to you the word entrée is misused because Americans erroneously use the word to mean 'the main dish'. JP looks up the word in a document specifically for the standardization of word definition/meaning and finds entrée as meaning the main dish. You're retort is the dictionary is wrong? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure how your post above refuted the assertion that the Oxford dictionary is correct.

Boom.

It's correct North American usage. It's also totally ....... stupid.

It's actually a very interesting question you pose Kropo. Its one I happen to know a little about. Moreover, one that's been debated. Your notion of what makes sense is neither correct nor based solely on other's idiocy, lack of logic or irrational because you happen to disagree. Hear me out. If your point is "standardization" then simply one can be imposed, regardless of logic. We can, if we chose, impose a standard based on a particular logic, however which is more important than the next?

MDY vs
DMY vs
YMD vs
all number vs
a combination of numbers with letters.

(Letters and numerals are equally symbolic).

Proclamations with a date have evolved all throughout history. The Romans kept time based on the rein of the emporer. If we used that system in the United States today, we would use Obama as part of the date. In fact it was a common notation in history, many ancient cultures employed it.

You ask for "America" to get with the program of standardization while let me point out why you use the year date 2016. Did history start two-thousand and sixteen years ago? Ah ha. While we are 'Monkey'ing around, why do you suppose you don't also include the year of the Monkey in your date? Does today, the Friday, the 12th have as much meaning to the logic you propose; a 7-day week as opposed to a 10-day one, because 10 is certainly a more "standard" number (did you know 10-day weeks were standard in the Chinese culture)? Who also, btw, included the reining dynasty as part of their date pronouncements.

Why don't you use the year 5776? What's your "logic"? Let me guess, because it's not 'generally accepted' throughout the world. Is that logical? If that's the case, 2/12/16 makes as much logical sense in fact more sense because of America's predominance in the world! America is the single most dominant nation on earth currently, and as such given you use the year 2016, a Western Christian notion, perhaps your question should be, when is the rest of the world going to get with the program and use the American system of date nomenclature.

Careful with the history lesson, Jum. The system of counting using the alleged birth of some Jewish hippy in Nazareth was invented in 525 CE (or AD, as was), by a monk in Romania. As a consequence, it is a European invention.

Haha, while we are on the subject. I'll tell you a word I feel is misused regularly. "Unbelievable" to mean awesome. "Incredible" to mean awesome. The prefix "un" and "in" by definition mean "not" making the root word the "opposite" meaning. (Though before anybody cites the 2nd definition for 'usage'....).

'I was impressed with Mr. Emmett's reported on the Sepang debacle, it was unbelievable.'

(Wait...)

I made no assertion about the counting system of the year date 2016 currently in use by America and 'the world'. (There's a message there).

The subject is the point of contention regarding the "American" use of mm/dd/yy as it pertains to world date standardization.

American exceptionalism, is another fantastic topic. Would you like to change the subject?

So you mean queue as que is something totally different but yep, a 'line up of people awaiting a public servant to respond to their query' would suffice.

The one that is mis-used and really pisses me off is 'heroes' when used to describe athletes ........... a hero is Weary Dunlop (look him up), it sure aint no ....... cricketer or motorbike rider

All this talk about dates has me feeling better.

Speaking of dates, yall wanna meet mine?

Gordon Ramsay needs a 4x2 to the head for being Gordon Ramsey ............
I don't get why culinary "arts" have become so big. I heard some famous chef just committed suicide. I don't know the details, just caught a blip of it on "news". Why do you and Cool Blue hate this dude? Just asking incase I need to hate on him too.

Yeah you should take his advice sometime...ye who dragged in a bunch of posters who didn't say .... to you with his usual 'gang of 4 or 5' comment.

Oh, give it a rest. Your tiny minority of haters are all of the same ilk; "Birds Of A Feather" as it were. It's like when I see one member of (any hate based group you'd like to insert) guy in a photo and I can't help but think of the group as a whole. Whenever you make some assholic remark attacking me, I can count on a few of the clan to "like" or in some other way to signal approval of your abuse, so it's only natural that I express contempt for you as a whole.

Personally - Anthony Bourdain is the ..... Especially since he turned me on to AA Gill. Gill is to travel and cuisine, what Arrib is to PowerSlide.

That guy probably committed suicide coz he over-cooked an egg. In the foodie world that's equivalent to over-cooking a scallop which, in turn, is equivalent to mass murder.

And I didn't say I hated Gordon, I just said he needed a kick in the arse.

Same as Blue here - never said I hated him but personally, I struggle to tolerate self absorbed, righteous, egotistical ......s who consider themselves superior to all other people on the planets and behave in a manner as obnoxious as he does (there are others on the list ............ including Aussies).

Basically, from what I have seen and heard the guy is a first class tosser of the Fogarty variety

Agreed, good tv is Anthony.

I like the classics... Keith Floyd and then, later, Nick Nairn. Seminal stuff.
