I look at most Italian machinery as female. Exotic, quite shapely, expensive to maintain and oh so temperamental. Just like a number of italian ladies I have known in my single days.

You may be looking a bit too deeply into what is being said. Nobody has been talking about how they want to grope and do naughty things to their bike and to please tell me that my feelings are right that it is a female so I don't feel gay.

We are more talking about the spirit of the bike as certain things about it remind you of the characteristics of a male or female.

The translation is "consolador", usually all the words that end in "o" or have an "o" in the last syllable are male and all the words that end in "a" are female.
