James Toseland’s new Tech 3 Yamaha boss has said he is impressed with the British rider’s s attitude, willingness to learn and work ethic as he sets about the massive task of becoming a competitive force in MotoGP next year.

Herve Poncharal has been impressed after James Toseland made a promising start to his premier class career with test sessions in Sepang and Jerez last month.

Toseland has spent the majority of his career in World Superbikes, carving out a big reputation for himself with two world titles for Ducati and Honda.

His growing stature was underlined last weekend when he finished fourth in the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year, narrowly missing out on third place by less than a thousand votes.

Herve Poncharal said he liked James Toseland’s humble attitude and told MCN: “I’ve seen other riders coming from different championships and the biggest problem is, it doesn’t matter how big you have been somewhere else, when you come to MotoGP you have to come with a humble attitude.

“I have all the confidence in James in the way he approaches everything. If he had come here and said ‘I’m world champion, I’m going to show you what to do and what I can do’ then this would not be good.

“That was sometimes the problem in the past but James has a humble attitude and taking it the way he is taking he can be very successful.

“I think he is a clever guy and he doesn’t make any excuses.”

I'm hoping that JT has a good season next year, I don't expect him to be the top rookie, he hasn't got the package for that, but as Guintoli proved this year, you don't have to win races to impress.
<

And getting fourth in the Sports Personality of the Year was pretty good, considering how little coverage his WC ( and bike racing in general) got.

I hope JT has a great year! He has agreat attitude and should add plenty to the MotoGP paddock! I expect good things from him!

Is it me or does JT look alot like B. Spies.

Anyway, yeah, he will do just fine in MotoGP. Finally the Brits have somebody worthy to cheer for. Maybe this will help 'some' of them get off Rossi's jock, and stop hating on the other English speaking champs, since now they actually have a fellow countryman to root for.

i would love to see the tech3 squad beat the factory team this season. with the factory divided into 2 one man teams, each on different tires, i think it's possible. unlikely but possible. if yamaha just give them the support they need & michelin get their .... together this season. i think jt & edwards will have a stellar year!
<

Frosty, wishful thinking I'm afraid. No chance would Yamaha allow Tech3 to overtake the factory team. What would that do to their reputation? I'd love it, but it just won't happen.

That's a great comeback Frost. But I think IR is right. Do you remember what the Ducati boss told Barros after he nudged ahead of Stoner at Mugello? Well the same would happen at Yamaha I think. But I don't think it would even get to that, I can't see either of the Tech 3 guys challenging the factory primo Donnas (and extremely talented) Yamaha boys.

Now let me go ask Santa my wish list...

I think hes arrived in MotoGP too late and he didn't get a full factory ride.

Its gonna be difficult.

yeah i know it's wishful thinkin but if by some strange chance it happens, it is racing after all, i hope that yamaha don't take that attitude. i would be very upset indeed

i sadly agree. "factory supported" and "full-factory" sound similar but in reality, are worlds (or opposite ends of the grid!) apart..

still, good luck JT and hope you can progress...

I agree with this. Some of our british brethren might be surprised how quickly their current broad perspective on motogp racing narrows, and at how quickly valentino becomes their second favourite rider, if toseland becomes competitive, which I don't think is at all unlikely.

wow, cremem.... I can't tell if there was something lost in the translation or if you don't like Tolseland...But either way, I have to agree that in order to become WC of any series, you don't have to ride or drive very well....just get yourself a platter and stand in line. Someone will be along shortly to give you your WC!!!!

Oh dear, somebodys girl went off with a brit methinks..........Councelling may help.

Anyhoo, Bayliss will be back on the 2 litre Ducati next season, so I'm sure he will do just fine. BTW, what kind of guy loses one of his nuts and a finger taking it easy? I think he was trying pretty damn hard out there, but now he has his capacity advantage back Im sure the title will be rightfully his again.

I'm doing great. Nah, I hadn't checked out the Petrohead. I will now. Congrats. I'm thinking of trading in my 749 for the 848. Tomorrow (its 2 am right now and can't sleep) so really, today at 730am, the local Ducati dealer is going to have test drives. I may just leave my bike and ride how with a new one.
