MotoGP Sprint Race Points Question

Do points earned in the sprint races count for a rider's overall championship total? I know they are making a new category for sprint races but I've seen conflicting info on whether these points count for overall standings. To me, it's stupid if they do not. Can someone please clarify? Thank you.
 
I have read that a sprint race win does NOT add towards a riders career tally. Example, if Zarco get's his first race win during a sprint, it will not count in historical records.

Half points will be awarded to riders in the top nine positions of the sprint races.

In a normal grand prix, the top 15 riders score points in a system of: 25, 20, 16, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

In the sprint race, the top 9 score points as follows: 12, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

This format will be for all Grands Prix and has no bearing on sunday's main race – although it counts for the championship." Is there a Sprint Race Championship? And what's with this? A lap record set in a sprint race will count as a lap record but not a race record. Either these races are races that count or they are not. Just do it as WSBK does it. Both are Dorna, are they not?

My understanding is that the points count for the championship but your finishing position does not become your grid position for the main race. I don't think sprint race laps should count as a race lap record.

Agreed, with tyre condition and race duration they will be faster to qualifying laps, which of course are also seperate in the record books.

As excited as I am for these races, I think they may also have the possibility to blow up in Dorna's face. With so much parity between the bikes and riders now there could be some epic tangles between guys which hopefully nobody is seriously injured in, the flip side is that without having to worry about the tyres over a full race distance it might look a lot more like the bridgestone days where the top few guys break away and might each be seperated by a second +.

I wonder if Michelin is going to bring special tire compounds for the sprints. Certainly the tire allotment for each team has gotta increase, yes?

Maybe the best way to understand the new sprint races from a systems standpoint is not to consider them as races. A sprint race win is not a career win or a season win. A sprint race lap record is not a race lap record. Finishing position in the sprint race has no impact on Sunday's grid so sprints can't be considered qualifying events either.

The sprints are just standalone events with championship points awarded so the manufacturers and fans are forced to pay attention.

Yes that's the way I see it, the race has nothing to do with the Championship. except that the rider gets half points added to his championship tally.

Have to wonder, do the teams get to have a 3rd bike just for the sprints - seems unlikely. Do they get a greater engine allotment?

This all smells like a perfect-storm/cluster ..... They’re going to have riders (previous to the main event) pushing extra aggressively
In the sprints, on tires inflated in a way that results in more crashes. Oh sure, that makes a lot of sense.

Sounds like a great recipe for increased odds of riders being injured in sprints, and either riding injured in the main event, or worse

I *think* I saw teams will get one more engine for the season. So that's what, 7 total?

They are all making mildly positive remarks. Yeah, Dorna and IRTA have either addressed the concerns, or they’ve been threatened with fines.

So we are halfway or a bit more through the inaugural sprint/GP race format.

Initially when announced I was for it, but not entirely.

Now we've had a decent look my thoughts have changed. I prefer the old format to the weekend.

Friday free practice and set up time. Saturday morning more same but riders are winding up towards Qualifying setting the laps and giving us an idea of how the race may look. Then we had Q1, Q2. Saturday done. Let's wait for Sunday.


Sunday. Warm up, last chance for set up and tyre decisions.

Sunday arvo. Let 'em go for the race. One race. One chance. Balls to the wall.


The weekend slowly wound itself up to the finale, the show. Now it just doesn't feel the same.
