This does nothing for me, I even moan about moto 2 because they sound ...... Watching bikes circulate a track in silence won't catch on imo.

Formula E has caught on in spite of the silence around tracks.

All depends what your definition catching on is. Could it support itself as the main draw of a series, or is it an amusing time slot filler in a much more popular series.

Formula E does not run as a support race to Formula 1 or any other FIA sanctioned race series. It runs on it's own as they generally are running on street circuits in the middle of cities to attract the urban demographic.

If done right you could do the same thing with a MotoGP Electric series. Run it during the off-season so there is racing in the winter. Who knows, you could get appearances from the regular GP guys.

Dorna's version would be as support race for each moto GP round.
I can understand the popularity of city centre events for the spectacle, but not at regular tracks.

At PI in 2009 they had electric bikes as a support race, the bikes then where'nt as powerful as they are now and the field of only 4 bikes was rather lame. Not hearing them as they came by made it much less of a spectacle in all honesty.

Surely it doesn't matter about the noise its the competition.
It wouldn't make the slightest difference if motogp bikes were silent, its the quality of the competition that matters.

At Indy in 2012 they had a support race of Harley 1200's.

I think I'd rather watch electric.

At least it was easy to get good pictures of the Harley's; you could just run along side them.

And it gave you time to go buy another giant can of beer and deep-fried turkey leg before the real racing started up again.

I think the sound adds to the excitement if you look at formula 1 it was quite underwhelming when the new engines were introduced, the first thing people noted was the cars sound tame, I have to agree with other posters saying it does nothing for me because the sense of speed is reduced by the lack of sound. I have actually sent a letter to this effect to MCN magazine in the uk, hopefully it is printed in next weeks edition.

Mick Doohan 5 time GP champion seems to have a different opinion when it comes to engine noise and Formula 1 ... i tend to agree with him, sorry. Would you also enjoy a theatre performance with no sound ... and enjoy the show just as much with only the visual stage acting???? The riders, although racing are also putting on a show for the crowd.

I always like comments like these...highlights who the real racing fans are and who aren't.

The sound makes it visceral for the fans, who after all, have safety barriers between them and the riders at MGP tracks; provides a more intense experience. I would bet that the riders would love riding electric bikes if they performed well. I remember an interview with Pedrosa about 10 years ago where he stated that he asks Honda to make the pipe as quiet as possible. I can't stand it when street riders have INSANELY loud pipes. That said - after all these years - I still get a kick, hearing the engine reverberate back at me when going though a tunnel or overpass; still a big kid at heart. Imagine going to a 4th of July fireworks with no explosions.

Would work fine for the deaf dumb and blind fans. Its not like their not already there. Just look for those dressed in yellow

Hearing Stoners Ducati at PI was amazing, that engine sounded downright evil and angry compared to the other bikes.

Because people love the glamour of it but the racing is predictable and not exciting as it was. Majority of people have a greater connection to cars hence the popularity, whereas bikes are seen as dangerous so less likely to be watched because they don't ride and can't relate. That's just my opinion of course [emoji6]
