”Casey Stoner is my closest competitor because we are the fastest now” – Jorge Lorenzo.

Lorenzo: my main competition is Stoner

by Ernesto Emmi

Jorge Lorenzo was interviewed by "Koran Jakarta" while in Indonesia, and the interview subsequently appeared on Crash.net. It was a rather interesting interview, as "Porfuera" admitted to have learned a lot from Valentino Rossi during their three years together at Yamaha, yet he singled out Casey Stoner as his main rival for 2011.

“I'm the champion, but that's the past - Jorge said - Now we start fighting again to be number one in 2011. We must concentrate fully. I keep saying Casey is my closest competitor because we are the fastest now. Seeing from the Valencia test result and how our best times were so close.”

Nobody knows what's going to happen in Qatar - Lorenzo went on - The night race is beautiful, but different and maybe in Qatar the winner is another rider. Not me or Casey. Rossi only rode for two days with Ducati so it's too soon to know about him with Ducati. He's a great sportsman, has a good image, won nine world titles, is really talented and is capable of winning with Ducati. But remember, Ducati has only won the title with Casey."

Looking ahead to the future, Lorenzo is satisfied but still motivated: "I'm happy for what I have now. If I don't win more titles, I'm still happy. If I win more, I will be happier. This year we will have a different bike. I have new team-mate [Ben Spies] who is young and energetic. The competition will be more interesting. I always learned from Rossi, and I'm a perfectionist with an eye for detail, just like him, when it comes to developing the bike. Now we have to be smart and understand the bike's condition. Basically we need more power and acceleration for this year.”

Cracks me up that he speaks about Spies as being young and energetic when Spies is what, 4-5 years older. I guess he figures since he is the WC and #1 at Yamaha, he is the elder spokesman

Last year it was him and the year before that it was Rossi. Its cool he is right. Every year there is one faster person. Funny thing is that Casey was slower than Rossi last year. I can't wait till they bring back the 1000s. The bigger bikes should allow "SLOWER" riders to come back to the front. I predict 2012 will see Nicky and spies become aliens again.

depends on the rules....but I like your optimism.

Spies may be older in years but he is much younger in GP racing, so will behave, ride and learn like a younger rider.

Spies isn't an alien yet, but the change might help him become one.

Kind of agree - but then again perhaps he already is. He's making light speed progress - and just hasn't landed yet. 'Mother'ship Mary is in orbit preparing to take over the world.

One cannot object that Stoner and Lorenzo have been the fastest riders in the last races of 2010. But notice how he completely forgets Pedrosa, and how he is a bit too eager to archive Rossi as a "great rider of the past". He may be right (we'll know in one year time) but he may also be very wrong about dismissing these two.

He should also watch Spies better, a strong potential spoiler in 2011. His tone re. his teammate sounds a little condescending...

Saw that.

He's just zinging Rossi. Compared to the Pie Man, Valentino is ready for a walker and case of Depends.

But notice how he completely forgets Pedrosa,

He clearly considers Stoner more of a threat than Pedrosa, he's already mentioned that he's made observations from the Valencia test. If you call a coin flip as heads you don't feel the need to specify 'not tails' as well unless you are talking to a .......

and how he is a bit too eager to archive Rossi as a "great rider of the past"

He doesn't really say anything of that nature

Quit trying to hate on Lorenzo just because you are fed up of one or two people hating on Rossi

Granted. Maybe Lorenzo innocently forgets Pedrosa and doesn't really mean (or hope...) that Rossi belongs to the past -- maybe -- but still he conveniently overlooks another detail: that Stoner is the fastest guy in MotoGP today... Faster than him as well.

No, the company here is good and I enjoy the debate. I'm afraid I do not like Lorenzo on my own, no need of any help for that. So if it really is between Lorenzo and Stoner.... Go Stoner!

Well if you read the comments he makes it seems he thinks Ducati will be Rossi's limiting factor this year, and never says anything even remotely about him belonging to the past. As far as saying Stoner is faster than him, firstly its debatable. Last time they were on track they set nearly identical times. And secondly racers very rarely if ever come out and say that someone can do something they can't. At what point did Rossi say Lorenzo was better than him last year, he didn't because he is a racer and if he believed that he'd already have lost, even though its there for all of us to see.

Haha, wow dude. You defo provide me with much comedic relief. He praises Rossi by saying never rule him out, but according to you, he's archiving him to the past? Try reading it again and this time turn on your brain. He isn't saying anything factually wrong, he referred to the lap times from Stoner (on a new bike, so the question is answered) and himself, and they were infact fastest. Everybody in the world saw Rossi test and conluded there was cause for concern, except the boppers. Even Ducati were stunned threw themselves under the bus with the theme, its their fault. Lorenzo, being somebody rooted in reality, is simply echoing this reality. Why mention Pedro? Yeah, he'll get his wins, but if you got Stoner and Pedro on the same bike, newsflash, Stoner is faster.

About Spies, nice try in trying to garner support from his fans to your agenda. In what world does a person who mentions his teammate as "young and energetic" in an interview about who will be your toughest rivals to mean he was "condescending"? You've lost it J4rno. And I think i've been the one to press you at every corner, and now you're like a cornered animal frothing complete ........, just like Talpa my buddy.

It's just Lorenzo using rossiesque mind games. I doubt Rossi or pedrosa are perturbed by this.

Absolutely. Plus I think it is fairly clear that he disloikes rossi, but not necessarily stoner. You can bet he is worried about rossi , as I seem to racall that he rather than stoner won 2 of the 3 championships contested since jorge entered the premier class.
