As he mentions, he'll still wear them...it is a major issue with leg wear. I almost bought a pair of kevlar jeans once, problem was they were real stiff and didn't think I could wear em all day at work as they looked like Carharts.

Trav, I was wearing Kevlar jeans on the day of my big hit.

Whilst nothing was going to save me from the car - human impact, the jeans were never pierced (the chassis rail went in through my boot - or the bone came out) and the jeans held up. For the 27 broken bones, crushed right leg and two punctured lungs I do remember saying grogley (post coma) "see, no road rash".

Saved me a lot of grief and I wouldn't ride without them or proper leathers.

Not wearing them is like rooting a poxy whore with a condom made out of stockings. It might look real but it isn't going to save you from the bad stuff.

Andy, I'm glad your still going to ride. From all that you have told us about your accident, you and your loved ones are very lucky. Your area is like summer year round, right? I can only imagine how much harder the temptation to wear shorts in Australia while riding a quick errand.

I'm not saying that I'll endorse not wearing protection (" Not wearing them is like rooting a poxy whore with a condom made out of stockings. It might look real but it isn't going to save you from the bad stuff" this had me LOL), I just see this being and issue that we will never see end unless some new ultra discrete and easy to wear protection comes to the market.

Great story by the author, not that I need any reminding where I live... Constant 30-35 Celcius year round, flash rain and flooding, sand on every road surface... Frig every 125cc scooter here does 100kph no problem, so many low-to-mid speed crashes. SE Asian doctors have to be the world's best at debraiding and bone setting! Like the author I gear up so the serious rides BUT... I ride my scooter without a lid and in shorts all the time and have the skin-scuffs (albeit minor ones) to prove it! It's not vanity, just convenience and an unhealthy belief in my riding skills!!

+1 for kevlar jeans. There are so many manufacturers now, it is possible to get really decent tailored ones that look OK for casual wear.

I have a BMW Air suit which feels like you are wearing a t-shirt and speedos

The only problem is it is silver - to reflect heat. You look like a ...., but it really, really works and is my choice for round-town in summer.
