Ilmor motogp engine?

K

Katt

Says in AMCN that the F1 engine manufacturer is building an 800cc engine for 2007 and will be testing it on the grid before the end of the season. a compact engine. 70 degree V4. The rev ceiling is currently at around 18,000 rpm ( i have no idea what that means... but i hope that satisfys the tech. fanatics)

not very shocking to me ... im not very clued up on the technical aspect ... but this is what got me:

Ant West or Max Biaggi is rumoured to be on the grid on a Ilmor engined bike before the end of the season ...

and apparently Sito Pons has also been linked with the project too.

Werent Ilmor working with Eskil Suter to test their engine in a motoGP frame. They didnt say anything about it but I thought theyd be selling the motor to Kawasaki. It sounds like a hot air rumour to me, Katt. I mean, Ant West? Geez, on an 800 he`d make DePuniet look fast. They`re probably saying the same thing in the UK, with Ellison linked to the ride, in America saying it`s going to Spies, And in Italy saying Biaggi`s riding it. It might not even be happening at all. I`ll belive it when Ilmor themselves confirm it....

Biaggi.... When will rumor starters lean he`s a .... idea for a factory team?

it says here that Suter is building the chassis ... and that he was the person who built the Kwakka chassis's up until this year ... nothing bout selling it to them.

I thought he still worked for Kawasaki. That`s gonna be a loss, just so some F1 engine builder can prove they know how to waste money

Ha ha, not much faith in the F1 engineers Richo???

I doubt Sito is involved in this, he is a Honda man.

yep.... don't count on pons with this suter/ilmor f1 lump.

Engineers? All the faith in the world. Engineers make the world go around. Theres no reason the project shouldnt work. Good Chassis builder, good engine builder, but you know stuff like this never works. I think the Petrojunks in SBK proved that. If it did, however, could be a good platform for KRSR to relaunch his war on the big four. Not Pons, though.
I honestly think its a rumour. I mean, Biaggi? Pons? WEST? It all sounds a bit far fetched to me.

It all sounds true to me except Sito Pons' involvement. I've been hearing the Ilmor powerplant and Suter chassis for about a year now. Generally, rumors that last this long tend to bear fruit. I think seeing the combination on the grid by the end is a bit optimistic but I can see it coming together for 2007. As far as riders go, who knows. Biaggi is a candidate but I think a project would like to save itself some cash and steer clear of his drama. West is actually not a bad theory, he did much of the development for the KTM 250 and it is already a proven race winner. And if it gets wet, he's an honest podium contender in MotoGP. The guy is the fastest man I've ever seen in the wet.

Still a rookie on a potentially all new team with a manufacturer who has no real experience in bike racing? They`d be better off giving the ride to someone else. I think the whole scenario fits team KR perfectly, that at least gives them some motoGP experience, but as far as riders go, I wouldnt be putting a rookie on the bike in it`s debut year. Gibernau could be a good bet if Ducati fire him and he dosent get a better offer. He`s a good rider and he`ll have a year of full factory experience to top his allready race winning experience. Hoffmann could also be a good choice. He`s slow but apparently he`s good with development. Anyone else I can think of is either not good enough (eg. Cardoso, Ellison) Too old (eg. Checa) or out of reach (eg. Rossi, Pedrosa, Hayden, Melandri, Capirossi, Hopkins, Nakano)

doesn't sound like they expect to be competitive with the engine either .... an 800cc up against all the 990cc? ... i didnt know that they would allow it into the class in the first place ...

west has said that he knows of the engine, but doesn't know if he'll be riding it ... saying " i hope its true" ... ttt

I`ve heard the rumors too, but I was under the impression that Suter was still working for Kawasaki, who were providing assistance to Ilmor, because Ilmor only do engines. And that it was possible that Kawasaki themselves would buy the engine and use it themselves. I wasnt aware that Suter had actually left Kawasaki to work for or consult Ilmor in the chassis department

ahh shudddup i know that ...
<
but they want to have the 800cc engine on the grid THIS year against the 990's

THIS year? well, that is very stupid. I doubt anything will be ready for competitve trak time this year, even if it was a 990

yeah i know aye. they've said before the end of this MGP season

i have the article in front of me now ... says that the engine has already completed its first bench test in April, that rolling tests with a complete chassis is planned for July.

Even if it`s allowed to race. All they`ll be doing is showing the factory teams what stage thier bike is at. That`s why Ducati and Honda are doing SECRET tests. Sounds very stupid to me....

Ilmor built engines for McLaren, the winning 1998 and 1999 McLaren's were powered by Ilmor engines (funded my Mercedes).

A few years ago Mercedes bought the company and recently one of the co-founders (Mario Illien) started a new company with the same name. This MotoGP engine is one of their first projects.

So the "new" Ilmor isn`t the same Merc-backed full of money group that won F1 races? I`m thinking this is gonna end up like Petronas all over again. Only a lot more pricey, and without the gasbag former world champ.

The new Ilmor has no Mercedes funding, the old Ilmor is now called Mercedes high performance Engines or something similar. They are not related anymore.

No disrespect to Petronas but I think Ilmor and Sutil know much more about racing bikes than Petronas did.

Agreed, they had Carl Fogarty running the team. That says it all right there. How much flak will I get for that comment?
