Moto2 last year was.. approximately
50,000€ entry fee
50,000€ fuel and tires
Plus all of the team expenses, bike, wages, logistics, consumables, etc...

ITS EXPENSIVE.

The idea is to get more sponsor money than expenses.

Every bike on the grid gets a bonus paid to them according on their finish position.
So basically , you'll get your initial 50,000€ back if you are top third.

A moto2 rider needs to bring sponsor money to the team. About 250,000€ per year.
A rider that doesn't have money will not ride.

I have worked on several professional racing teams... first off it always costs more then you think, its one of those thinks that separates people who think they have a lot of money from people who actually have a lot of money. I have seen and worked with some very clever business men, who lost their ass when they tried to get into racing. Its more then just buying the bike, the tools, and hiring mechanics... you have to get the whole operation to and from every race (and testing) and take care of everyones food, travel, ect... then you have replacement parts, and other intangibles... so its one thing to start a team, its another thing to operate a team for an entire season.

My guess you could probably start a team for $250K, that should cover the bike and engine package, and tools & equipment. I think (someone correct me if I am wrong) the series helps with some of the logistics of moving the equipment around, I am sure there is a fee for that. Hiring personal, and moving them around the world for a season probably $1.5 million.

What about if you just bought the whole lot on eBay?

I have known a few that have bought existing teams, or better yet teams that are involved in financial seizures... but you still need a facility, you will need a big truck to move everything around, and lets not forget a tool box cart with tools.

I thought you just went to the DORNA counter and specified how many riders you wanted, how many bikes, how many mechanics and logistics people, then ticked a box for what colour bike you wanted....hence why eBay might be easier.
