Honda reasserts commitment to MotoGP

23rd January 2009

The Honda Motor Company has reasserted its commitment to the MotoGP motorcycle racing world championship even though it has confirmed that it is considering withdrawing from most other forms of motorcycle racing as a cots cutting measure.

Motocross, motorcycle trials and other forms of off-road racing such as endurance racing are thought to be the likely areas that will suffer the cuts after the company forecast a 190 billion yen operating loss for the second half of the 2008-09 financial year.

Honda spokeswoman Akemi Ando told the Reuters news agency, "We have not formally decided yet but we have been looking into the option of pulling out. It is something we have been thinking about for a while since we pulled out of Formula One. We have no plans to leave MotoGP."

In December Honda announced that it would withdraw from the FIA Formula One World Championship and that it’s Brackley, UK based F1 team would be put up for sale.

A bit off topic, but I am wondering if you financial wizzes could answer this. Is all this reported loss of operating costs simply due to the devaluing of various currency and company stock or are people just not buying product?

HOW IN THE HELL CAN HONDA CUT COST IN OTHER FORMS OF MOTORCYCLING RACING?!!! What else is there that is full factory honda?

Honda is sooo full of it's self. $10 bucks says Honda tries to sell off the motorcycle division in the next ten years.

they aren't racing and they OWN that track

They aren't officially entering the 8 hour. Also the BSB team has just 3 bikes

Like that will save them any money

Just admit it, Honda shot motogp in both feet by pushing for four strokes, and dropping to 800cc. Soo .... HONDA!

I've always been led to believe that the 8hr was the most important thing to Honda. So it's quite a shock that they pulled that!!

This really sucks for the other Talented riders in hondas different disciplines of motorcycle racing. these guys dedicate their lives to riding, then their careers are cut off due to bad decisions from execs. Honda should just pull out of moto gp and send fagdrosa and his soulmate (puig) packing!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Slide @ Jan 25 2009, 08:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>mate... no honda, no motogp....
Your talking about the days honda fielded the best riders like doohan and rossi. I think now adays Rossi is motogp if not look at all the whakos that worship him. Stoner and Hayden have a strong following and are good enough contenders as is Lorenzo. Dovi and pederosa have to be the weakest Honda team ever as of now they have good riding skills but lack the charisma that would make them superstars like Rossi. But you never know, no one gave Stoner a chance before 07 and look how that turnd out. So Dovi might suprise me but pedrosa is another Sete gerbenau He'll always be close but not good enough to be a champion plus he's a complete ........ so I guess my beef is with peders not honda but theyre stupid for siding with him. we cant afford to lose anymore teams though so i guess i wouldnt want to see honda go either

What he means is that if there is no Honda, there is really not much of a grid to look at. If you think it's thin now, think if there were no Honda's there, either...

6 Hondas
5 Ducatis
4 Yamahas
2 Suzukis

Losing Honda is losing over 1/3 of the grid. As it is we've lost plenty of the companies that fielded bikes in the 4 stroke era. Kawasaki, Proton, Ilmor, Aprilia, Blata, KTM... Admittedly they were all bottom feeders that never really established themselves (although Kawasaki was close, and at least spent money on riders).

The 4-stroke era is Honda, Yamaha, and Ducati, plus Suzuki and Kawasaki hanging around and not doing much and a rotating cast of others. The big problem is that all of the rotation is out at this point.

It was Yamaha who set the 4 stroke ball rolling. Honda are no more to blame than them, perhaps even less.

I don't think that one is clear cut. In terms of performance, the Barros - Haydem, Biaggi - Hayden and Criville - Ukawa combos were all pretty weak. If you are talking specifically about charisma then Doohan - Criville and Criville - Ukawa are both pretty dull.

Please explain.

Yamaha were the first manufacturer to propose that motogp went 4 stroke.

Nope, it was Honda that brought up the idea. All had to do with emissions, and Honda dropping two strokes completely out of all it's products.

Do you have a source to support this? According to something i was reading by Michael Scott it was Yamaha who initially proposed the 4 stroke switch, but of course the idea was widely supported.

so what are you saying here? you must have charisma & be popular to be a strong rider or team? they'll have to act like clowns or plant flags to be a competitive? i think your a bit delousinal if you really think this. as much as i dislike puigdrosa he is an excellent racer. he just needs to work on his bar bashing skills a bit. dovisioso is a huge talent & a fighter to boot. do not take this team lightly... they will be at the front.
