Honda poised for Dani Pedrosa talks

Honda will kick off negotiations with Dani Pedrosa over a new MotoGP contract later this month.

HRC management plan to open talks with the Spaniard over a 2010 deal after the Dutch GP in Assen at the end of June.

Pedrosa has made no secret of his discontent with Honda in 2009, heavily criticising HRC for its failure to quickly develop the RC212V and improve performance.

But Honda boss Shuhei Nakamoto is a big fan of the 23-year-old and wants Pedrosa to sign an extended deal with the official Honda team, where Pedrosa has spent his entire MotoGP career since moving to the premier class in 2006.

Nakamoto has conceded that this year’s RC212V is simply not good enough for Pedrosa to win races, and that he accepted Pedrosa and Italian team-mate Andrea Dovizioso condemning the bike.

But Honda has denied ever formulating a bid for fellow Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo despite intense rumours of a swoop for the impressive Fiat Yamaha rider earlier this season.

Nakamoto said: "We have not started talking with Dani yet. But we are happy with our current rider line-up and after Assen we will start speaking with Dani." Pedrosa has spent his entire Grand Prix career racing for Honda and won three world titles for the Japanese factory in 125 and 250s. But he’s never been able to seriously threaten to win the MotoGP title.

He’s now facing a desperate battle to be fit for his home race in Barcelona next weekend. Pedrosa suffered serious muscle damage in his right hip during last weekend’s Italian GP in Mugello.

His world title hopes suffered a massive blow too in Mugello. He now trails series leader Casey Stoner by 33-points after tumbling out of the 23-lap race.

mcn btw

I hope they resign him and Dovi to an extended contract. This way Honda won't see a world title for a long time. Honda deserves it.

A solid team and any one of them can win races. I think the pairing is good for Honda.

Agree, but I still strongly suspect that there will be talks in teh background with the likes of Lorenzo and others off contract.

Honda need to win a championship and soon.

And that's the crux of the problem really.

I'm with you on the background talks. Maybe they brought it up because we were talking about it. I'd like to delude myself to think that we're influential

I'm thinking Honda want's to keep the Repsol money, and Repsol want Pedders, even though Honda said they would never let a sponsor dictate who rides their bike.

I bet he is in agreement with Rossi though. That he, Rossi and Stoner, could win on the bike. So if Pedrosa wins it will be the bike and not the rider

Well more specifically repsol wants a Spanish champ!

Dani Pedrosa has denied that he has signed a new MotoGP contract with Honda, but did reveal that he will try a new chassis during this weekend's Grand Prix of Catalunya.

The Spaniard has been a factory Repsol Honda rider ever since his 2006 MotoGP debut and is the only Honda rider to win a race since the switch to 800cc engines.

Pedrosa has won two races a year since joining the premier class with a best championship ranking of second, a distant 125 points behind Casey Stoner, in 2007.

But the 125 and double 250cc world champion is yet to mount a sustained title attack and has appeared increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress with Honda's RC212V project.

Rumours had also circulated that Repsol might try to sign fellow Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo to replace Pedrosa, but those looked to have died down and Pedrosa remaining at Repsol Honda seems the most likely scenario.

Nevertheless, pressed on whether rumours that he had signed a new contract with Honda for 2010 were true Pedrosa responded: "We have not even had that conversation yet."

Pedrosa, who will ride with the aid of pain-killing injections this weekend after cracking his thigh last time out at Mugello, did confirm that he will try a new chassis in Catalunya, as Honda fights to adapt the RC212V to the new single-tyre rule.

“We have something which, if the conditions are good, we will try straight away this weekend,” he said. “It is a modified frame to improve the stability under braking. That is the main target and we will check how it works. If I can handle the pain then I will also take part in the test on Monday.”

Pedrosa will start round six of the 2009 world championship in fourth position, 33 points behind Stoner.

Then Why Havent they? Dovi has never won a Moto gp race and i dont see him wining one any time soon. he will be lucky to podium this year. Pedrosa keeps on crashing and getting hurt, I think its a mental thing with him, too much pressure from puig honda spain and himself. I think once he learns to relax and just go out and race he'll do better

So?

Melandri was 44 seconds off the front runners, yet hes scored a 2nd.

I did watch!!! I did See that he did not win the race and I also did see that he did not Podium. he has been coming close but has not sealed the deal. Maybe he can podium at the next race but Dovi Is not champion material. maybe your mad because of that

I don't see any big reason why Lorenzo would leave Yamaha and go from a perfect to a worse developed bike.Exept money or if he wants to feel like he is the definite no1 in the team.I think Repsol is going to try to get Simoncelli for 2011,or Spies or the biggest they can get,but for next year they don't have too many to choose from as i see it.

MotoGP is on death's door. There is a good chance it won't be around in current form for 2010. We'll be lucky to get 18 bikes on the grid next year. Kwak is def out. Suzuki could still pull out. Until displacement restrictions are replaced with more wide reaching, easy to implement rules, the sport is unsustainable. Rossi can leave whenever he wants and his departure will cut revenues in half.

Dani's future is subject to much more than his performance and health. His a wholly unmarketable rider. Spanish men aren't that big in stature, but he makes every man in his country look like a happy go lucky giant. Repsol overlooked this because they expected a championship. This will NEVER materialize. Falling off is a part of racing. Breaking bones everytime just isn't natural. Howver, since the Honda is lagging and Lorenzo loves Yamaha, Dani's seat is safe. Without a wins in 2009/10 Dani will not have a 2011 GP ride (Suzuki or Gresini are the only options). There just aren't enough bikes.

LOL, please stop talking like Ben Spies could win in MotoGP. I think he's phenomenal but not better than Melandri, Hayden, Dovi, Edwards, Capirossi on equal equipment. He'd be riding around mid-pack. There is no way he'd get past Stoner Pedro Lorenzo or Rossi. Yamaha Italia is gonna keep him, getting him a few wild card rides in MotoGP for 2010.

On a Factory Yamaha He defenitly can be competitive, But he has a better chance of achieving world peace than getting on one of those bikes right now. On any other factory bike i have to agree hed be a mid pack rider. You are right Moto gp is in some serious trouble and they have to do something before Rossi leaves because once he is gone so is half of the moto gp fan base. If any one noticed, Rossi was at the SBK Race this weekend,( as a spectator). It would be great if some how SBK and Moto gp combined to make an ultimate Motorcycle racing series. other than that Moto gp's only Hope is Moto 2. How sad will that be if Moto 2 becomes the highlight of Moto gp
