Hodgson lands Ducati GP ride

Neil Hodgson moved a step closer to full time top-level racing after landing the job of official Bridgestone test rider for the Ducati MotoGP team, and makes his debut on the firm’s 800cc GP7 imminently.

2003 WSB champ Hodgson was left out in the cold for 2007 after he couldn’t land the ride he wanted with Xerox Ducati in WSB.

He is now set to take over from injured Bridgestone Ducati tester Shinichi Itoh, in a move which puts him right back in the loop with one of the top teams in MotoGP.
This could prove critical to lining up a full-time ride next year, or getting the chance to race this year as a supersub.

Hodgson’s pulling power is still huge, being mobbed by fans when he appeared at Donington for the 20th anniversary celebrations at the weekend.

Speaking exclusively to MCN, Hodgson said: “I’m well chuffed for a couple of reasons. Number one is that I want to ride a bike as soon as I can and number two is that no matter how much training you do, there is no substitute for doing laps, which I’ll be doing lots of in testing.

“It’s a great opportunity to get really dialled in so that if the need arises to fill in for someone injured, I’ll be ready.”

Hodgson will get to ride the new generation 800 which should suit his high corner-speed, smooth precise riding style.

He said: “I’m excited to get the chance to ride one of the 800s. I watched the first GP, never really thinking I’d get a chance to ride one.

“Looking at the way they work I know I’ll go better on a bike like that than one that’s really loose and sliding everywhere.”

Marlboro Ducati boss, Livio Suppo, added: “Neil was an obvious choice given his availability. He is well known by Ducati and has lots of experience of different bikes and tyres.”

Good to hear Hodgson now has a bike to ride. If he impresses enough he could be in with a chance of getting the actual Ducati ride for next year as Capirossi seems likely to retire at the end of the season and Melandri who i thought might replace Loris there is currently making himself as unpopular as possible!

JT is going to be the next brit in GP's. It's good that Neil has now got a gig, but i don't know how much you can read into it as a long term career move. Who else could Ducati call? I hope I'm wrong though.

Yeah, hes the best rider doing nothing, but all the good riders have jobs already, lets hope he is useful enough to do some good for himself and ducati.

it just goes to show - if you chase enough ambulances sooner or later you'll get a ride - and a decent one at that.

Been watchin the world supers this season, surely JT will get the Duke next year?

Anyone else think that Biaggi is gonna take the title? His starts are .... but by god the guy is neat and tidy on the track.

i used to support biaggi in the old 500 days but lost respect for him but i find myself rooting for him in wsb, junkie will probably tell me its because he is no longer a threat to rossi but i think its more a case of an ex gp rider kicking wsb ..., he always was neet on the track untill he runs wide, i think if he can keep his emotions and focus in order he has a real chance. it was bloody nice to see him laugh in parc ferme after his mistake, mabe a more relaxt max will get his crown in the end.

Agree with you Rog, I thought the guy was a total .... for a long time, but maybe being demoted to the diesels has given him a bit of humility. I dont see anyone there who will .... his head like Rossi or Doohan, so, this could be the making of him.

Completely agree. I thought he was a total .... in Motogp. Whining about bikes and teams and never getting the job done. I was cheering for Haga but I found myself wanting Max in the fight, I like seeing him up there.

I suppose it was a personality problem, maybe as Jumkie has stated before, “His growing up story” does not help… I also see the side of ‘a lot of other people having as bad problems and not even getting a chance of riding the best’est’ bikes in the planet’… All that apart, as a rider he is very good on my view, technical and fast, but if under mind pressure guess he used to crack up. Has got some good (not great or the best) numbers on him though.

From 2000 to 2005, 6 years in MotoGP:

43 Podiums to average 7.2 Podiums per year (9 in 3 of those years).
10 Wins (7 in Yamaha and 3 Honda, not a single one with Repsol).
15 DNFs out of 97 starts (1 Excluded, 3 no first laps, 11 not classified).
1222 Points to average 203.7 Points per year (only second to Rossi).

So if what has been said of him acquiring some humility… hope he does well!

Nice job finding those numbers WHMP. I also find my self cheering on Max in the SBK races. For one I think it is fun with those comming from behind. Conseving tires with a clean riding style and climbing all the way to the top fight. Secondly I don't like the way Max were pushed out in the dark by a rotten HRC strategy that make lot's of others complain as well. That was a llittle too much even for Mr. Whiner himself. He looks more like his old self these days. Happier and more realxed. Good for him.
But his main problem remain. He does to many mistakes, and bail out of those real man to man fights if it gets to tough for him.

I've got a lot of respect for the guy but I've never been a massive fan of Max - (of-course, he was Rossi's arch enemy which didn't help) and I didn't think he would 'fit-in' in to what appears to be a friendly, lighthearted WSB paddock, but i've gotta say - he looks right at home - he's always got a smile on his face, he's relaxed and he's on top of his game.

Just as importantly - I think Max is good for WSB. He raises the profile and brings much media attention with him

It's all good - good luck Emporer Biaggi

You mean like in the last turn on the last lap? Pretty damn good?

Good for Neil, it at least gives him some track time on a very, very competitive bike. At best, he gets a few shots at racing on a team with more talent than he's ever seen. It's nothing for the forseeable future, maybe he'll impress. Who knows.

As far as Biaggi goes, I like Bayliss and JT myself but I've enjoyed watching Max in SBK. He seems to be far less of a prick and smiling and laughing. Glad to see it.

Has anybody else noticed on eurosports superbike coverage that Jack Burnicle is completely desperate to hate Biaggi, over analyzes every bit of his body language and complains if he rides past anyone on the slow down lap. Its starting to annoy me

Not as annoying as mamola with his "just wait til" "I think we'll see that" ......... He spends most of his time speculating about what he wants to see happen, then contradicts himself regularly in MCN. I dont think he has got his head around (shock horror) people who aren't American winning races. This is not an anti American statement though, its an anti mamola statement.

Sorry folks, I still think the guy is a total fanny. (UK fanny not US fanny feel free to google the difference if anyone isnt sure!)

Whitham is the best commentator out there. Period. And he's a drummer, so that makes it hard for me to say nice things about him. as they say, what do you call a guy that hangs around with musicians?

Pete

BTW, the answer is "a drummer"
