Hayden ready to 'duke it out' in title defence.

New MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden has promised erstwhile title-holder Valentino Rossi that he is prepared to go 'toe-to-toe' with the Italian in order to defend his crown in 2007.

The American, who snatched the 2006 title seemingly against the odds in Valencia, told BBC Five Live radio that, despite still getting to grips with the new 800cc Honda being introduced for next season, he could only improve as a rider and that that would help him take the fight to previously unbeatable Rossi.

"Beating Valentino this year was unbelievable , and extra special," Hayden admitted, "It's not like beating up on your little brother or picking on the little kid!

"However, I think we've made him mad, and he's going to come out fighting. But my best is still to come, and I'm ready to go toe-to-toe and duke it out with him in 2007."

Hayden revealed that winning the title had helped him to heal the potential rift with Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa, who had skittled the American - and, seemingly, his title hopes - at the penultimate round at Estoril. Although the air between them was understandably frosty for a while, Hayden explained that Pedrosa had vowed to make amends by helping his team-mate in Spain and, with the title won, the pair needed to work together to keep the upper hand over Rossi and Honda.

"We need to work together with Dani to develop the new 'bike," he said of the mandatory move to an 800cc machine for 2007, testing of which has led to calls for greater power and more adjustability.

"The new 'bike is quite different," he revealed, "It's smaller and I'm not yet comfortable on it. We've still got to understand its full potential, but I've got some good guys working for me at Honda...."

what do you think...GO!

I can't wait myself, Nicky is banging in those consistent fourth places that he does so well in all the pre season tests! Going by the form book, if Nicky does retain the title, it will be by finishing 3rd and 4h every week again.

I'm not interested in hearing him talking like that, Capirossi however, could say that and I'd take it seriously. I do like Hayden, he is this years champion, and you can never take it away from him, but he is not a proven race winner. Period. He is a VERY consistent rider, and did what he needed to this year, but unless they move the whole motogp season to Laguna Seca, he is not going to be fighting Vale toe to toe all year.

He rode a good, consistent season, won the title, and carries the number 1 plate into 2007, but it wasn't a dominant season where he stuck it to everyone week in week out. so coming on like Mohamud Ali is fooling no one.

i agree pete.

Yeah, very true. But I'm not even sure he'll be able to keep those consistent 4th's, if luck is with them I'm guessing these guys are going to be faster than Nicky:

Vale
Melandri
Loris
Edwards
Checa ( Sometimes )
Stoner ( Sometimes )
Pedrosa
Elias ( Sometimes )

I really don't think he can 'duke it out' with anyone, let alone win the title!

Funny how Rossi fans read things so differently than Hayden fans might. It sounds to me like Hayden in a roundabout way is saying Rossi is still the man to beat. What would you advise the World Champ to say if not I'm going to come out and fight to retain the title? Rossi telling the public Gibbers will not win another race is Ali like, not what Hayden is quoted as saying. M Ali- " I am the greatest of AAAALLLL TIIIIMMME !!!!" N Hayden- "My best is still to come..." I think it's a fact Hayden is improving and even though he will never be at the level of Rossi maybe he is the right man at the right time to pull in two or three championships. Tornado, the list you have are the same cast of characters and if you take out Vale one word comes to mind, inconsistant. How can you slight Hayden's riding and have Edwards on that list? The only thing CE has proven is he is one of the best test riders in MotoGP and is no real threat to Vale, that's why he[Vale] likes Colin so much.
<
Oh yeah, if I'm Nicky I'm loving the fact it's more important to go race a rally than test the new bike, I thought Vale was going to re-focus this year?

Some good points in there V8, Yep, Vale does come out with the most Ali type sayings but, to quote Jaco Pastorious (probably the most influential bass guitarist of all time) "It aint braggin if you can back it up"

And don't you think Vale will be having a laugh to himself that when everyone is testing, he's off rally driving? Hardly makes him look like a worried man. Roll on next year, and it may come as a surprise to Nicky fans, but, I'd like to see him come out fighting at every track, to prove what he really can do.

I'm a racing fan, I want to see the top guys pushing each other every weekend, yes, I'm biased to Vale, but I want to watch racing and may the best man win!

Cheers

Pete

Yeah he's right, you can accuse Nicky for saying this but Rossi would do the same!!

"I'll make sure he never wins another race again..." - Rossi to Gibernau

Rossi isn't 100% innocent...BUT I'M A ROSSI FAN SO GOO ROSSI

Yup, and this is Hayden just doing the Rossi psychological thing (or in his case should that be thang?
<
).

No doubt Rossi will be along soon doing the same. They can say what they like though, the track action is what counts

Its all a waste of time.
Honda wil win all three championships next year.
Melandri will be the rider's champion.
Enough said.

What the hell! Do you want Hayden to say "WAH! WAH! I GIVE UP, IM TURNING FRENCH" I cant believe some people here sometimes. Its like anyone who opposses the GOD Rossi must have his mouth cut off, get off his nuts for like 2 seconds will ya!

The only reason Rossi is rallying is that Yamaha only have one bike, it's hardly practical to have guys sharing a bike while testing, two completely different settings. Rossi should be scared/mad/whatever. The surprises are going to keep on coming next year. Honda already have a fleet of 800's, what does that tell you? The Honda's will be hard to beat, all seven of 'em.

the only time i saw Nick "duke it out" with Rossi was in Qatar, and Mugello.
and he lost "those" battles....
