Well.................250's in the 70's!!

I didnt know that, anyone care to expand on what Harley was doing in bike racing!?

Moto GP 250 World Champions
(FIM Grand Prix)

1976 Walter VILLA (Harley-Davidson)
1975 Walter VILLA (Harley-Davidson)
1974 Walter VILLA (Harley-Davidson)

The Harley Davidson VR1000 is correct, never won a single race in its near ten year stint in AMA Superbike despite being piloted by some of the best riders in the series and in the world such as Miguel Duhamel and Scott Russell. Duhamel nearly had a win wrapped up in 1994 ay Brainerd International Raceway and if I recall the thing broke down on the last lap, that or he pitched it away. The thing was was a real piece, the loudest and ugliest machine I have ever seen in AMA Superbike.

About the GP bike I think it wasn't HD at all, the bike was built by the Italian manufacturer Aermacchi. Seems the only HD part on the bike were the decals.

That explains why the bike was good.

What's he difference between a Harley-Davidson and a vaccum?
On a vacuum the dirtbag is on the inside!!

Cheers for the info chaps!

I'd suspected it was a re-badged machine - cant believe they were in GP's!

Did a google for the vr1000.........nice huh

Correct Teo,I was old enough to follow its progress,Villa was almost untouchable.BEN,the pic of the VR1000 is the road model made in a very limited number.

I`ll consider doing a short write up on that ,Ben.I have `The Harley Racers` by Allan Girdler, its a very imformative book and there is quite a lot on the HD/Aermacchi link up,they made flat trackers too and I`m sure their was a HD/Rotax link up too for a flattracker.Theres a good peice on the VR1000 too mate.

I remember Pascal Picotte getting stuck on that hunk of crap as well. It was bright red on one side, black on the other, so depending on the turn it looked like two different bikes lol

yeah a bunch of very talented riders gave that piece of crap a shot...Russel, Duhamel and Picotte.. That's the makings of an all stars team

the black was all the oil blowin out that side. you'd think a company that makes as much money as hd, could build a half decent race bike. at least 1 that could finish a race now & again. what a waste!

HD make all their money making crap bikes (Buell excluded)
Theyre professionals at it. It works on the road because theres some really dumb people in the world. But lots of chrome and bad electrics will never win races.
And theyre not exactly at the forefront of technoligy. I dont imagine HD's development program could match a jap company, partly because their engineers are either arrogant, lazy, dumb or all 3. And partly because they work on a theory of "if it aint broke, dont fix it"
