I really hope Lotus got some tricks hidden. Whatever happened to that Lebanese Khalil dude? Heard he was gonna be a test driver for a team this year.

According to Marca.com, Argentinian driver José María Lopez (aka 'Pechito' Lopez) is the first driver of the USF1 team.
If someone with more knowledge in Argentinian nicknames could explain me how sportsmen get their nicknames there I'd be interested to hear.

Pechito = Little ......

Nick Heidfeld signs as Mercedes test/reserve driver .... hmmm considering the nobodies that are taking some of the seats and 3 places still left one would think Not_so_quick_Nick could have done better.

Maybe he's been promised a race seat when Rosberg embarrases Schumi and Schumi goes back to retirement home crying (or demands Rosberg to be sabotaged and fired).

What, you mean he got beaten by the Schumeister??

Sauber and Renault presented their cars today. Sauber looks rather boring, they better get some sponsors soon. Renault is using a colour scheme based on their first season in 1978, the car looks like a bee (so at least that's better than the ING orange mess). They also presented their 2nd driver Vitaly Petrov, 25 y old, Russian, GP2 runner up, 15 Million €uro backing rumoured form Russian oil company.

I SO miss the 'old days,' back when cars looked good, and you could tell them apart by the noise they made. It's sad that racing a computer sim - driving antique cars - is FAR more interesting than watching modern Eff Wun.

So finally the long wait is over! First day or test at Valencia. Clear sky, about 12ºC.

Massa's first outing since his accident was quite good, fastest lap and 102 laps under his belt today. Ferrari showing some pace and reliabilty.

Most surprisingly was De la Rosa's 2nd (running first half of the day) in the Sauber C29. Of course Sauber could be running low weight to lure some sponsor to their spotlessly white car but even so it was a good showing.

The Schumi fans will be glad to know MS was on the pace, only 4 tenths slower than Massa and half a second quicker than his teammate Rosberg (albeit running in different conditions).

McLaren had a quiet day in the midfield, we'll see what they're capable of when LH takes the wheel from Paffett.

Rubens and Williams didn't start off so well, 6th best out of 8 and the only red-flag came when the Williams stopped on track.
But it could be worse, Toro Rosso's car was most of the day in the pits with problems that only allowed Buemi to do 18 laps.
Renault was slowest (with Kubica at the wheel). They managed to do a fair amount of laps, but they're 2'5 s off MAssa's pace.

The test will continue on tomorrow and wednesday.

Formula 1 will operate a new points system for the 2010 season after an agreement between the sports governing body (FIA) and the teams.

The new system will see the top 10 rewarded in a 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 sequence to encourage racing to win.

Tyre rules will also be modified so drivers will have to start the race on the same set of tyres with which their grid time was set in qualifying.

In another development, 'double diffusers' will be banned from 2011.

The Formula One Commission, a decision-making forum for the teams and major stakeholders, agreed the amendments to the sporting and technical regulations at a meeting on Monday.

|What is your reaction to the scoring system changes?

The measures will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council for final approval within 48 hours, which is usually a formality once all of the parties have agreed on changes.

The new ruling on tyres, reducing the number of dry weather sets per team from 14 to 11, should introduce another strategic element to races.

"In addition, to encourage teams to run during the Friday practice sessions, one set has to be returned before the start of the second practice session, and two sets before the start of the third practice session," said an FIA statement.

The decision to ban the 'split level' or 'double-decker' diffuser will not come into effect this year. The main diffuser will be allowed in 2011, but its permitted height will be reduced from 175mm to 125mm.

Diffusers improve downforce by channelling the flow of air smoothly under the car, but in 2009 there was controversy when eventual champions Brawn, Toyota and Williams produced radical versions of their own.

Teams unveiling their 2010 cars have been coy about their rear diffusers, sparking fears that a fresh row could erupt when the season starts on March 14 in Bahrain.

"This is the first car in which we have had a clean sheet of paper to really exploit the interpretation that was developed last year for a design of floors," McLaren engineering director Paddy Lowe said at their launch last week.

"You will see we have produced a fairly extreme incarnation of that but we won't be alone in that. We believe you will see some pretty extreme solutions on our competitors' cars as well."

Valencia Test day 2:
Massa stays on top, Kobayashi continues Sauber's good (or fake as the cynical ones say) run. Hamilton took the wheel from Paffett and the McLaren improved it's pace and position on the laptimes table.

Renault had a better day than yesterday, Kubica went up to 4th place and managed a huge 119 laps around the Ricardo Tormo circuit. So did Rosberg albeit at a slower pace in 5th place.
Rubens and Buemi in 6th and 7th places. Looks like it's gonna be a tough year for these 2 teams (Williams and Toro Rosso).
