Ducati consider Melandri, Gibernau swap

By Toby Moody and Steven English Friday, July 18th 2008, 01:14 GMT

Marco MelandriDucati Marlboro team boss Livio Suppo has admitted that the team may think about replacing Marco Melandri for the remainder of this season if he does not deliver the performance they expect at Laguna Seca this weekend.

The team pledged their support to the Italian going into this weekend's US Grand Prix, but with Sete Gibernau having been confirmed for his third Ducati test at the end of the month at Mugello, Suppo has said that they 'may think about' the switch.

"Marco will continue the season," said Suppo. "We always said that the season up to now with him has been strange. The last races because the performance has been too far from the reality, so it was a kind of nightmare.

"At Sachsenring it was much better. Of course the result was nothing because he crashed, but at least before crashing he was the fastest on the circuit and this was a very good sign.

"I really expect Marco to be fast here, and if not then we will think about it."

I hope Macio can make a quick decision over his future...
I hate to see him like a snail on the track.

Melandri to be replaced by Gibernau could start some rumours about many other riders for 2009!

so we will see what ducati will make!

It was reported in Australian Motorcycle news (current edition Vol58 No.1) that this is a done deal.
(Article by Colin Young page 119)

Melandri will be riding the third Kawasaki from round 12 (Czech gp), this is Jacques test bike and Sete will be on Melandri's Ducati.

These two (above) things are stated as unequivocal facts.

What is speculated is that IF Sete rides the bike and proves that it is not a 1 rider bike then Nicki MAY be the rider in Marco's spot next year....

I swear i read that Kawasaki can only run a 3rd bike if the rider brings a sponsor who is willing to be on a green bike.

Yeah, that's the big question This confirms that he is talking to them, but apparently he still seems to be considering Honda!

Edit: pretty much what Helix said at the same time.

Honda are probably the polite don't burn your bridges just yet talks. Nicky is a Honda boy to the core and Honda does have a reputation for having good bikes in the premier class (or at least they did until they got the 800s

)

BTW: what the hell is up with those Red Bull fedoras? I look at Nicky and Dovi on the grid each race and go WTF????????

Dovi looks like a butcher in that white one.

Andy, I myself actually have thought that way too, because Bartholemy never hide of it and he stated that they spoke to Melandri... I was very sure if he will move to Kwaka, but rumor sometime ago came out that Fausto Gresini also talked to him... Hope everything will be revealed soon.

Tom, I heard that Kawasaki is very restricted about sponsorship, they only allow a sponsor as long as the green color still dominant... but truly I never read about Melandri must bring sponsor to get a ride.

I believe that rumor was from 2006. It was that Kawasaki would run a third bike for Biaggi IF he brought sponsorship to the team. Now that they have Monster money, I don't think that scenario would hold true.

Again... I take that Austin

Thx mate...

Who is going to lose out from all of this is the question??

If Marco goes to Kawasaki I think that West might be looking for a job and it is no secret how much money he owes.

If he goes to Gresini something will have to happen right away. My guess is that Nakano will be out but that leaves no Japanese in the contest so Dorna may not allow this.

How fitting!!

Check out this pic. It is from the Thursday Images at Laguna Seca, compliments of SuperbikePlanet.com.

Marco Melandri's Future

The photographer has a rather keen sense of humor, doncha think??

First off he needs to change that hat with that painters brim. He needs a real cap. Secondly I would love to see him bounce back and get the bike to work for him at Laguna and even win it. It is a shame that his season had this much trouble. It will make him stronger though cause he is a real talent also and has the ability to win.

I heard that Monster wouldn't pay for the third bike.

I haven't heard anything like that. I've heard he would be riding around on OJ's bikes (already Monster sponsored), which would likely mean that OJ would be out of a job for a few months.

Well we'll see sooner or later wont we. Marco's feedback might be better than OJ's anyway

West owes a lot of money and he rides very slow, I heard he crashed during FPR yesterday. Westy could move to Japan to become a test rider (rumors around the net

)...

If Nakano goes, it will be very bad for the Japanese, and they won't allow it, Nakano still better than deAngelis on the table right now. I really want to see the end of this 'puzzle.'
