Further to the Bautista thread, I'm wondering what will happen to Dovi, next year he is 34 at season start, a Rossi he certainly isn't, so how long will he retain a seat at Ducati.
Then Ducati have another problem, Miller and Petrucci, both are fast and I imagine thats one reason they gave Petrucci a 1 year contract, to push Dovi a bit, sadly its not happening.
Then of course there is the problem of who will ride next year, with contracts seeming to be decided mid season quite often, then realising that maybe you made a horrible mistake, alla Lorenzo with his wins for Ducati.

Personally I'd hate to be in Ducati management, the stress will only get worse.
Miller DNF's 4, season position 13th, top 6 positions 4.
Petrucci DNF's 2, season position 8th, top 6 positions 6.

Lets see what happens in the next 3 races.

Perhaps harsh on Dovi given he currently leads the championship. However I doubt that MM will have enough dnfs to give Dovi and Rossi a chance at the title, and similarly that Dovi dnfs enough to give Rossi a chance at second. We shall see though as you say.

My point was more that neither Ducati factory rider currently looks ensconced for 5 years, and that Gigi (probably correctly) seems to consider that his bike is good enough.

Ultimately every rider will want to be on an M1. By far the best bike. All the riders will be desperate for a seat on it. How Marquez is still able to win on a wild Honda with a wrecked shoulder is a miracle. Shows just how superior a rider he is to the entire grid.

5 years is more then a lifetime in MotoGP...

As long as Dovi is a podium contender he will be worthy of a factory bike, I don't see any reason why that would not be Ducati, he's also been instrumental in the development of the bike the last couple years.

There is only 1 factory seat not locked down going into 2020, and thats Petrucci's. Miller is also on a 1 year deal, I think Ducati will give the 2nd factory ride to whom ever they think is better between Miller and Petrucci. Keeping in mind that, teams usually lock in rider deals before the end of the season (usually no later then September).

You're having a laugh i think, the Honda without a doubt is the best bike on the grid and with MM on it its a forgone conclusion. Rossi for all his experience moved over to let Rins past, he knew the bikes not good enough.
manufacturers championship;
Honda
Ducati
Suzuki IMO.

1 YAMAHA
2 DUCATI
3 SUZUKI
4 HONDA

Just look at the kind of form Zarco, Syarhin, Quartararo and Morbidelli show/showed on the satellite Yams.
Put a top rider on it like Lorenzo or Marquez and Yamaha would have the riders championship sewn up.

If . . . it had the grunt of the Ducati. But it don't.

1. Honda
2. Ducati
3. Suzuki
4. Yamaha (close to Suzuki)

Crazy to think on it - but the Honda has become not unlike the Ducati of 2007 in that no-one can get it on the top of the podium except the one stand-out freakishly talented rider in the series.

I seriously think, if HRC had retained Dovi instead of buying him out of his contract all those years ago - they'd have by now developed a much more user friendly machine.

If Rins can come from behind and blow by a guy with as much racecraft as Rossi with that kind of confidence, the Yamaha is definitely in trouble. People going on and on about how fabulous the Yamaha is - are repeating memes from years ago. Yamaha simply has not kept up these last two seasons.

Sure, but from various things Dovi has said I don’t think he wants to hang around until he is 40, and good as he is I doubt he has the talent to continue to be competitive that long as Rossi has been. If he was on a run of world title wins sure, but I don’t see that happening. I think Yamaha will be transitioning to Rossi managing rather than riding for the factory team who will have a say in which riders are chosen, MM may be at Honda for the long haul and seems to be the only one who can ride the bike anyway, so that leaves Ducati and on recent form Suzuki as competitive/possibly available factory rides in the shorter term.

Yamaha have had a rider talent blip since Lorenzo left, nothing wrong with that bike. Zarco seemed to like it.

BINGO

Yamaha YZR M1 is an absolute weapon. Huge corner grip. Sweet handling. And it hasn't been blown away on the straights by any other bike so far this year.

I know for a fact that Dovi's intention is to do two/three more years then he's done. He is burned out by some of the non-racing related occupations of being a pro rider and wants to retire at a relatively young age and enjoy his family, homeland and money (can't blame him).

That's part of why Ducati made only a 1 year deal to Petrucci and signed Bagnaia...they are looking for a next "symbolic" rider to build a project around, but haven't yet figured out who he might be...

It is also known that in 2016, BEFORE approaching Lorenzo (who had been approached in 2010 too, but that's another story) Ducati tried to make an offer to Marquez, that MM's management rejected...if and I do mean IF Marquez is ever changing Team, I'd bet a pint he'd go to Ducati...

20 years ago age 34 was ancient in GP, but these days the training is so much better, medical technology is better... and aside from Marquez, it takes most riders a few seasons to get accustomed to the GP bike coming from the lower ranks. The riders are also intricate in the development of the bike.. the GP19 was built for Dovi, as will next years bike.

Sure - talk to AMA guys and GP guys who raced in the ‘70s and ‘80s and you’ll be hard pressed to find one who had any training regimen. Stamina and ability to heal or just stay healthy was much more about the genes they inherited.

Maybe for some, Rossi looks like he's diseased, he's gaunt with skin and no flesh.

Really? C'mon Mate - get a grip. I'm no Valeban fanatic - but the guy looks great for his age. This photo taken earlier this year at Sepang gives lie to your description.
Besides who cares what he looks like? In a helmet and leathers at 200 MPH they all look pretty good.

Okay so here is Rossi in 2009, he looks ready for a box today I think
