Gaping Maws: Corser's Jaw-Dropping Comments
he has no time for influx of ex-motogp riders ...

At a press conference held this week to promote the upcoming second round of the WSBK championship landing on the Island March 3-5, reigning champion Troy Corser had this to say about ex-GP riders Alex Barros, Max Biaggi and possibly Carlos Checa coming into World Superbike:

"There's been a lot of speculation about Biaggi, Barros and Checa...but there's not a lot of rides going. Unless they create some new teams ... but having said that the Superbike grid is almost full. It makes no difference to me if ten riders from Grand Prix come over, as long as they don't come in my pit box I am happy.

"I know there is talk of Biaggi coming to our team. He might be riding a Suzuki, but he definitely won't be in our box.

"It's all interesting, they (the MotoGP riders) have lost their rides and are all looking for a job. Before they said Superbikes suck, now it is the best championship in the world.

"Naturally they want to come to the best team in the championship, so for sure they want to be in our box. But we're all very happy. Kagayama and I get on well, we're great, we're all set up and we're ready to race."

The latest word down here today is that ex-Ducati man Carlos Checa may be slid into the Ducati team alongside Troy Bayliss, with Lorenzo Lanzi being shuffled sideways (Highly doubtful—Editor) . Amazing what a few bucks can do.

Imagine all the SBK regulars with Barros, Biaggi and Checa
in the soup—pardon the pun.

Even with all the young blood coming into MotoGP, 30 thundering Superbikes seems a better option than 16 MotoGP bikes chasing Rossi in the final year of 1000cc GP racing before yet another change.

Pretty harsh comments from a guy like Troy. Isn't there a third guy in their team this year anyway? I forget who he is or where he comes from.

Fabien Foret, 2002 World Supersport Champ. It could have been 2003, '02 or '03. I believe he is Spanish or French. One of the two.

I know and that's why I've gotten confused. But I am pretty sure he is the 2002 WSS champ and is Spanish. Almost positive, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I think if he was worth knowing about, we'd know about him. I'm not expecting any miracles from this guy anyway

I think that a number of the guys from MotoGP will struggle with motivation 'coming down' to WSB, although Biaggi still believes he has unfinished business in MotoGP he could be trying a bit. That said wouldn't you have tried when you had the best seat in the house????

I for one think Corser has a point and it's a bit of hard talk and bravado. At the end of the day there aren't many guys quicker than him on a WSB (oh errr John Kocinski for one though!!). Anyone remember Corser beating Doohans outright lap record on a Ducati at Donnington a few years back?

But it's not like Troy.

I think the GP guys are going to struggle to match the lap times, with a superbike's added weight and less power. Especially the 125/250 graduates.

Agreed. Guys like Barros and Biaggi (Should be ride WSB) will struggle with the heavier, point and shoot SBKs. Tried and true SBK vets like Bayliss and Xaus will flourish once again however.

Bayliss and Xaus are already doing well.
There's been a lot of reshuffling this silly season but as a result both WSBK and MotoGP championships should be great. A lot of riders are where they should be now (Bayliss, Pedrosa, Xaus, ect)

Agreed Drill.

And Agreed Ooost. Bayliss and other SBK originals will do well IMO. Its inevitable in my opinion because i think they all are still ver hungry and are back on machines much more familiar.

Its crazy when you think back to 2003 when we thought that guys like Bayliss, Haga, Xaus and other SBK riders would do so well in motogp. In a way they didnt do so bad its just that motogp is so competitive they were bumped down the order. Plus also in motogp the machine is more important than in SBK. In SBK there is smaller gaps between the bikes performances (i.e in motogp the RCV compared to the suzuki and then look at WSB, the GSXR compared to the satelite Yams).

Its great that 2006 will see a WSB grid of Haga, Corser, Bayliss, Xaus. A great line up i think.

My head for this year says Bayliss- imense talent and back on a very similar machine to the one he dominated on for a few years, has the determination, aggression and mentality to do it too.

My heart- Although i would like to see Bayliss complete his unfinished business of 2002, i have a funny feeling that this could be the year that Noriyuki finally clinches his first world title. It would be so good to see a Japanese get a world title and i think it is possible although guys like Corser and Bayliss will fight him all the way, Haga is on the same bike this year, that he was on last year. Something that hasnt happened for him since 2000. And look what happened that year....

Nori's time will come. If not this year, then in the future. For a relitavely new team, Yamaha Motor Italia are doing pretty good.
But I think '06 belongs to Bayliss. And I wouldn't really call it "unfinished business" unless Edwards was there, and he's quite secure on Camel Yamaha after his performance last year. That was great competition, between those two. That's real racing. Backing your tyre indangerously close to his, bashing farings and then not getting all huffy about it after the race.
Edwards and Bayliss are both top riders and top blokes.

Ron your head is right on, I have a hard time seeing anyone beating Bayliss. As far as your heart... I'm not so sure Nori is the guy who will do it if anyone does beat Bayliss. I think if anyone will knock him off it will be teammate Lanzi, new Honda star James Toseland (if he can get the CBR1KRR sorted) or Troy Corser. Nori is blindingly fast but he has never struck me as a rider with consistency. I hope he does it though, Japan needs a world champion.

And richo. Yes, Bayliss and Edwards are top blokes. They're the last of the gentlemen racers as I like to call them. Go out on track bar to bar rubbing and sliding and racing hard and not holding grudges. You don't see that anymore especially in GPs, even in WSB I think the paddock has gotten less friendly.

I don't think JT can do it again. I got this feeling that he's one of those guys with only one championship in him

I'm not saying he can't do it, I'm just saying I think it's unlikely. Halfway through '04 he was almost finished anyway. Pretty amazing feat to come back and win it, but I got a feeling it was a one off.
