Brake Levers, why did it take so long?

Motorcycles must be equipped with brake lever protection, intended to protect the handlebar brake lever(s) from being accidentally activated in case of collision with another machine. Acceptable protection includes the fairing extending sufficiently to cover the brake lever, as viewed from the front.

Such devices must be strong enough to function effectively and designed so that there is no risk for the rider to be injured or trapped by it, and it must not be considered a dangerous fitting (at the sole discretion of the Technical Director).

In case the brake lever protection is attached to any part of the braking system (eg. brake master cylinder), then the brake system manufacturer must officially confirm in writing to the Technical Director that the device does not interfere with the proper brake operation.

Im never in favor of knee jerk reacttions but you would have thought this would have happened after Sete went over the handlebars at catalyuna.

About time they came up with a brake lever guard. Thats making steps but until they come up with a Bautista guard theres still a high level of danger in the 1st corner

More like a 'twitchy-Spanish/Italian-bowling-ball-school-of-first-turns' guard.

I don't understand why this needs to be a rule. Why would anyone not want one, why have so few riders used them until now. It seems like common sense to me

indeed Tom. "Common sense is not a common virtue."

very easy reason why many are hesitant to use them, imagine you hold on to the handlebars to grab the clutch and the protector is smashed onto the handle bars...your hands trapped and is likely to be completly smashed. that said, if i was a rider i would use them and just let go of the bike as soon as i would fall. stupid engine rules

Great idea... my only concern (which the rule addresses) is that the guard is strong enough to not crush a riders fingers in a "regular" off.

Its been a long time coming...my only concern is a rider going straight over the front, trapping his hands and breaking his wrists in the guard(s).We`ll see.

The Steve Rapp crash at the start of an AMA Superbike race (I think at Road America) is a legendary front brake lever crash. His Ducati was in pieces. Miraculously he wasn't hurt bad.

Mick, Drill, cliche, a simple open design would is the solution. I posted a pic of one laster year after that Daytona crash vid i posted. The guard is not like a MX guard, the one designed for roadracing is a small piece extending from bar end slightly bent over lever. Not a complete loop over the handle bar.

Thanks Jum. Prompted me to find some pics. Found these:

The reason it took so long to have them ...... well the need for them anyway, they have been around for years ....... is because "close racing" is a new phenomena.

Back in the day, close racing was for the namby pamby tree hugging gay homosexuals ( not that there's anything wrong with that ) ....... they never had any of this "close racing back when the men were men ..... and so were the women!

Back in the day folk had a modicum of spacial awareness! none of this huggy kissy modern day euro/texan stuff!! riding within cooee of another bloke!

Back in the day a rider would merely tip his hat to the opposition as he ( or she ..... if she was a bloke! ) sailed by with a respectable distance kept between.

Back in the day if they got within two metres of the other rider, the other rider would get pregnant! ( especially if they were texan ..... or Reg.! .... or any of the boppers for that matter ! )
