Australia Could Lose the GP

This what i read in the Daily Telegraph today

The Victorian Goverment is considering switching the Australian GP to a night event, Tourism Minister Tim Holding said yesterday.

Organisers have been warned by F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone the Australian GP could be moved offshore unless the race is held at night in a move designed to boost global TV ratings.

But the expense of refitting the Albert Park street circuit to safely hold a F1 race at night is a concern.

NO ONE CHANGES THERE TIMES TO SUIT AUSTRALIAN VIEWERS SO WHY SHOULD WE CHANGE FOR THEM ?

Don't you have april fools day in australia?

Sorry gaz i thought it was some kind of joke - hence the april 1st comment - it appears to infact be serious.

One thing. There is a difference between "night" and "evening".
Lets try to clear up which is being meant: what time australian time is the race normally? (For my own curiosity: what time does it get dark at that time of year?)

The usual time is 2pm, which is 5am in Europe, I've read there are 2 options, an evening race at 7pm in February when the sun sets at 20:30, the race would be held in daylight or keep the current date and make it a night race, with artificial light. Which is more expensive obviously plus many drivers aren't happy at all with night driving.

Because most of the fans are in Europe, and global audience would be bigger if the race was held at a reasonable time for us.

I don't think an evening race is unreasonable to australians but the most important thing to consider in a night idea is the racing/driving/safety. Drivers don't like it?

What they should do to increase viewing figures is make it a condition to tv broadcasters that they have to broadcast the full race live and a full race delayed on free to air channels!

My thoughts exactly mate, and I'm not even Aussie. Bernie is a prick.

Yeah because your all on the other side of the world and behind in time to us why should we have to change ? When MotoGP is on in Europe it ends here around Midnight if i want to watch english football i got to be up around 1am-3am for games.

I dont see every race giving a .... about us having to stay up late to watch , so what will one race of in australia at our time going to do ? I mean .... just stay up late for 1 night of the whole frickn year it cant be that hard i do it every week !!

Does that mean that the Malaysian Gp and Japanese GP will be evening/night races too, because of their graphical nature?

Whats wrong with it is the fact that we have to change to make the rest of the world happy. You wouldn't see top half of the world change to night races to keep us happy would you!! we have to suffer for more then one race im sure the rest of the world can suffer for just one race its not going to kill them.

The point is we shouldn't have to bend over backwards to make people in Europe happy !!
