Rumors So Thick It's An Atmosphere

It's too bad that the proponents of the current green energy trend here in Northern California can't figure out a way to convert the current near-suffocating level of Nick Hayden to Ducati rumors into a way to power their cars. It'd put biodiesel mileage numbers to shame.

Current rumors have Hayden either having already signed with the factory Ducati MotoGP team for 2009, being in possession of a Ducati contract that he hasn't yet had a chance to sign or still mired in deep negotiations with Ducati for 2009.

Hayden meanwhile is--shock--not saying one solitary word on the subject or on anything else currently happening between he and the HRC team. While some expected him to finally unleash his inner-psycho (every rider has one) after his recent run of odd mechanicals and say he's had it and is going to Ducati, Hayden remains diplomatic and polished, at least in public.

Hayden has virtually spent his entire professional career with Honda, signing with American Honda for 1998 after racing a Hyper-Cycle Suzuki and short stint on a Muzzy Kawasaki. Hayden grew up with a poster of Honda hero Bubba Shobert on his bedroom wall and it was his childhood dream to ride Superbike and Grand Prix for Honda. The reality is that instead of a powerhouse, mutually beneficial relationship between he and HRC, one can only wonder if Hayden has ever felt truly welcome on the factory Honda GP team. At times, the relationship between Hayden and HRC has been like seeing a friend madly in love with a woman who doesn't, and maybe never will, feel the same way.

Some who know him say Hayden will never ride for anyone but Honda, that he'll go home to race dirt track in America if he isn't with Honda in Grand Prix; while others rub their hands together in gleeful expectation of seeing Nicky Hayden in a team where his contributions are welcomed instead of grudgingly swallowed like a spoon of caustic medicine.

Do you sign and not say anything till the end of the season, basically lie to Honda. Not his style.
Or do you agree and sign at the end of the season and keep Honda guessing,so they will still build you a decent bikee to ride.

Post Laguna, Ducati will drop a triple bomb on us. My "pulled out my ..." prediction:

1. Melandri is out for the rest of the season, no surprise to everyone.
2. Gibbers will replace him for the rest of the season.
3. Hayden is signing for 2009.

At this point, if Hayden is really serious about signing on with Big Red, and given the past 2 years with Honda, I don't think he will care what Honda thinks. If the signing is for real, I doubt he will keep anyone in the dark, it's too big a deal. Also I don't think Ducati will wait until the end of the season to sign him. All this of course if it's the real deal in the first place. I really want to hear Mylexicon's theory on this one.

sign with ducati, tell honda and finish the season as strongly as you can. no point in being ...... towards honda, it achieves nothing and IMO would not be nickys style at all.

do it with integrity

You don't need my theory, you already know the answer.

Ducati are hugely bullish on Gibby right now, but for whatever reason they can't seem to get him on the factory bike next season. It's probably because they have already signed Hayden, or Hayden's contract is nearly complete and they are simply haggling over the sponsorship/corporate responsibilities of each party.

Gibernau was talking about how he wanted to race badly, but things had to be "right". A team needed to prove to him they were willing to make a commitment. A week later D'Antin was sacked and Ducati announced it would overhaul the satellite team. More articles have since been written.

Hayden is already slotted into Melandri's old seat. I think he has signed because he's said on numerous occasions his contract with HRC prohibit him talking about his dealings with Ducati. He has openly admitted to talking to them, the only thing he can't admit is that he has signed.

On another note, Melandri is doing quite well at Laguna and has even stated that he has some feeling with the bike like never before. If things are inked out then this would be a real shocker to Ducati if Melandri does really well here...Although I am looking at FP2 and he is 2 seconds off the pace so, maybe he just got a lucku lap last round
