990's are making a comeback in 2012?

It needs to happen ASAP IMO....case in point, watch this weekends race as others have already noted it looks to be snorefest.

I doubt that's the case, ask Curve.

I'm not convinced that they will use heavily modified production based 1000s. There wouldn't be enough differentiation between MotoGP and WSBK for the MSMA to justify running in both series. Maybe it's just wishful thinking but I think that rev-limited 990s with electronic restrictions could likely be the most cost-effective, action-conducive formula. Just my thoughts on the matter.

Some say that what Ezpeleta has in mind is the possibility that "Moto1" 1000cc with prototype chassis and stock-derived engines (practically WSBK engines with maybe less restrictions) be allowed to race in MotoGP along with the full-proto 800cc we know, in order to have more teams and more bikes.

Couldn't this happen in 2010 Duhrna?

As soon as one of the pototypes is faster, the other one would be dead! Didn't that happen with 500cc?

Which would be an elegant way of killing the 800cc (hoping the 1000cc would be faster)

Or perhaps, they'd begin the same rules balancing act already seen in WSBK to keep 2-cylinders and 4-cylinders more or less on the same level...

The other, more important obstacle is the manufacturers. The MSMA are not disposed to allow production engines to be raced in the series, and though they may not be able to block a proposal in the Grand Prix Commission, they always have the nuclear option - pulling out of MotoGP altogether. That would be a very high risk strategy indeed, as the marketing benefit that they receive from having Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo, Casey Stoner, Nicky Hayden et al on their bikes is huge, and may outweigh any political advantage they get from pulling out of the series.

This is not yet settled, not by a very long way indeed.

There is no way the manufacturers would take the nuclear option. The fans want this, the riders want this. All they have to do is look at the fan reaction to DMG for going against the will of the people. If the fan percieves the OEM;s as being the hangup to a switch, they would be on the wrong end of the angry hoard. They had better listen up

The days of blaming Dorna are long past, imo. I was one of their most ardent detractors, but as more information has been made available, it appears that Dorna are fighting an uphill battle against the manufacturers. The sport has been getting more expensive and you've got to believe that Dorna are not keen to reduce practice time b/c they sell media properties.

I think this article is one of the strangest things I've ever read. All of the talk is about 1000cc bikes not 990s. The IRTA have been talking about 1000cc production engines, but I have no idea how they are going to get that through the Gran Prix Commission. Vito is talking about racing production motorcycles like TZ 750s?

Maybe it's just the presentation in the article, but it doesn't look like anyone is on the same page.
