Watching one of the Jerez practice sessions the Eurosport commentators got onto the subject of how the Factory Aprilias are distributed this season. They said.........

Bautista
Lutthi
Pasini
Debon
Barbera
Espagaro

I think it is clear that the top 5 riders in this list all have the factory kit, but i am unconvinced about Espagaro. I know he is in a top team but looking at his lap times and results it doesn't look like factory stuff, and i would have expected Faubel to have gotton the nod over him in the Aspar team. Adding to my confusion further Simoncelli looked particularly fast in Jerez. I know thats a circuit he randomly rides well at, but i'm now wondering if he has the last factory suported bike to help wave the Gilera flag.

What does anybody else know/think about this?

From motogp.com talking about Simoncelli: "The metis Gilera rider clocked a time of 1'41.427, just 0.047 ahead of second place rider Alex Debon. The duo make up a strong Factory Aprlia presence on the quater litre front row"

This suggests his bike is factory, but makes me doubt more things. Maybe there are 7 factory bikes?

just goes to show that the announcers don't know everything. espagaro is not so good me thinks. luthi is on full factory kit & he ain't lookin to impressive either imo.

As a luthi fan i've been waiting for him to have a breakthrough, but at the moment hes looking a little mediocre. Jerez looked like his best shot at a podium so far, but hes not getting it done.

Espagaro i think is either average on a kit bike or terrible on a factory. Although i'm getting more and more sure than Marco has the 6th factory bike. But even then i'm just guessing.

i believe that his bike is definately a full factory bike. he's been lookin really fast today & in jerez which had bautistas engine not gone pop, he would have at least finnished 2nd. to me the 250s are lookin like it's gonna be a 4 horse race. even though bautista has had ...... luck so far i still think he's the man to beat with kallio & simoncelli next & pasini with an outside chance.

I definitely share none of your faith in Simoncelli over a season.

Yea, apparently its easier to make a fast guy stop crashing and all that...........

If he can turn it around then good on him, if he can't i wouldn't expect to see him on factory equipment again

AFAIK there are 3 kind of Aprilias. 2008 official bikes, 2007 official bikes and kit bikes.

From the list you gave they're all on official 2008 bikes except Espargaró, who AFAIK has a kit bike.
Simoncelli and Faubel have 2007 official bikes and possibly someone else (I think Locatelli).
