2017 Suzuki GSX-R1000R Review

Having a soft spot for Gsxrs it's great to finally see the 1000 get a serious update for 2017. I'm wondering what sort of ride-away price the 1000R will be in Australia?

I'm guessing something similar to the 2017 base model blade. Its $22.5k + OR's in Aust and id imagine something similar for the GSX-R base model.

Seems now that all the Jap litre bikes will be over $20k in Australia.

The '16 model is selling for $15,990 ride away at the moment.

Can't imagine many stumping up the extra 6.5k for the new model.

Considering everything it comes with, the new GSX-R1000R is priced well. The R1 is great, but could use better brakes and suspension. The ZX-10R is very good, but is still using an old dash.

I love the new VVT engine, they seem to have got all the important things with this bike right. Things that I dislike are just superficial and on the base model really. The big daggy orange indicators from 1984, the front cowl on the base model without the LED strip lights looks really bland and cheap ... I dislike the dash also, I would have preferred an analogue tacho but if they are going to do a full digital display then at least do a full colour TFT like they have on the Yamaha, Ducati and the new Honda.

The big exhaust is ugly but i've been told that the catalyst (or most of it) is contained within the big can so fitting a slip on should get it breathing and sounding much better.

Looks much better once that massive stock pipe is removed. Flush mounted turn signals and a fender eliminator are also a must.

The lack of LED strip lighting on the front cowl of the base model also make it look rather dreary. It would have been a great idea if they used the LED strip lights on the front cowl to double as the indicators in countries that would allow it (looks better and would be easier/cheaper to assemble) I'm sure some aftermarket company will come up with something like that to retrofit.

The indicators in the mirrors was a great idea they used in the past, the only benefit of going away from them is that it makes taking the mirrors off for track use far easier.

Even with the non-photoshopped picture of the exhaust my gf asked me what I was going to do if Thor wanted his hammer back :D

I'm hearing ya mate, its pretty awesome value for money considering the price of the new model.

Imagine spending that extra $6k on the current model, tweaked engine, exhaust, brakes, awesome suspension, quick shifter and the rest.

2017 GSX-R 1000 dyno run - stock out of the box

Kawasaki ZX10-R 2016 Stock 181.20hp
Yamaha R1 2016 Stock 184.16hp
Suzuki GSX-R 1000 2017 Stock 195.46hp

Looking at the curve the VVT is impressive, it makes more grunt at 11k than the others do at redline.

I do wonder if Michael will keep a Beemer in the back of the van just in case though.
