Ruben Xaus has signed with BMW to ride the S1000 RR in the 2009 World Superbike Championship. Check out the story from 'Soup.

BMW must be over the moon to have such a great rider with such experience and brings with him sponsorship. Anyone think Ducati will be too worried about losing him? And speaking of new teams, anyone know who could be riding the Aprilia RSV 4 next season?

you think we will see Xaus on a GS sliding the back out with one hand in the air giving the umm um um thumbs up?

He's making a unwise choice IMO. He'll still be one of my fav's, but I doubt we will see any good results.

He's old and he wants to support his family. I'm sure BMW probably doubled his salary.

The guy is 30, not what I would classify as "old" however I do agree with you, I'm sure he is looking to make some extra coin before heading into retirement from sportbike racing.

I like Xaus, great guy, makes ballsy passes, a real racer in my opinion. However we all know he is prone to crash a lot. I think BMW is just looking for an experienced top 8 or so rider to give feedback on the new project. I wouldn't expect to see him with great results next year but I imagine he understands that. Either way its got to be exciting for him to work for a new factory that themselves are excited about moving into sportbike racing. Guess this may dispel the rumors Corser going to BMW? Unless they plan a 2 bike team?

yeah I was a bit surprised to see Xaus on the Bimmer. I think he will help the dev process a bit better than most who are in SBK. Shame since he has been a Ducati guy for a long time.

They are planning on a two bike team but cannot announce the second rider because who they have lined up is under contract. That's what I read at MCN anyways. Doesn't make much sense to me as isn't Xaus under contract to Sterilgrada at the moment?

Xaus rides hard and can be fast on his day when he's on it but he crashes alot and I don't know that he is good at setting up a race bike especially from a new manufacturer with no development? Personally I think Corser is the best choice, can win and post consistent results on any bike and has done so many times!

I heard Neukirchner was going to race the BMW - ideal for the German manufacturer to have a home rider and also a young star on the rise..

Unless Max N is ditching his recently signed two year Suzuki contract I doubt he is going to be on the BMW soon. Suzuki has a winning bike, I don't picture a young guy like Max N moving to a team that is still in the experimental phase, he wants to win championships or at the least place very high in them. The BMW project I think is going to attract older riders who are looking to perhaps chill a bit whilst making some good money.

I like Mr Xaus,so all the best to him.

I remember Steve martin saying Corser's status with Yamaha is unsure at the moment. Perhaps he could reunite with Aprilia?

Xaus has only raced on 4 cylinder bikes for two seasons of the last 8, 2005 on a yamaha and 2004 on a ducati motogp bike. I hope he can adapt and develop the bike at the same time.

That bike will be a beast to.

Pardon my BMW ignorance, but what bike exactly are they planning on running in '09? Has the street version been released yet?

The Eurosport guys were suggesting pretty strongly that Xaus' teammate would be Corser. Pretty exciting.

New model, S1000RR

Good move by BMW if you ask me. I heard rumours that Corser is also linked to go there. That would be a great team for BMW in it's first year of WSBK. Both have truckloads of experience (especially Corser) and both are capable of winning. I hope it happens.

I hope BMW have given themselves enough time to make all the spare parts they're going to need!

Just kidding love Xaus really

BMW seem pretty serious about this bike and racing effort. Three guys testing, Steve Martin, Kevin Curtain and Jeremy McWilliams. These guys want to win and I wouldn't be surprised to see the bike on the podium a few times throughout the year.

BMW

“I am very happy with the professional way all three riders worked and the amount of feedback they have given us. We are under no illusions of the amount of work we have to do before the start of the season next year, but we are ready and looking forward to facing this huge challenge.

“Up to now, we have done very little work on the electronics and have preferred to get the bike’s basics working well and I think we have achieved that. If our project continues at this good pace, I think we could surprise a few people next year.”

Whilst the main focus of attention has been at the track, a lot of work has been going on near Rosenheim, a small town about sixty or so kilometres south east of BMW’s headquarters in Munich. It is here that BMW Motorrad and its partners, Alpha Technik, will prepare the Superbike racebikes in a brand new state of the art facility, incorporating 7,000 square metres of workshops and offices.

The main workshop area is split into three parts and has two dynos - one for the whole bike and another which can simulate any racetrack in the world.

One of the three buildings will house BMW Motorrad's Off-Road and Enduro team, while the other two will be for the Superbike project and for spares and parts.

The progress of the facility's construction has been rapid and eight months ago there was nothing but grassland where there are now workshops, offices, meeting rooms and a canteen for all the employees. The new facility marks just another step of BMW Motorrad and Alpha Technik on their way towards the 2009 Superbike World Championship season.

Ruben height and weight would just nice to handle the beast. But it would be an uphill task for BMW and Ruben to be competitive and at the same time to develop their bikes in their first and second year seasons to be par with the Duke, Yamaha and Honda ..not to forget the Suzuki
