Drugs found in Kawasaki Racing Team trucks claim

A report by the UK Border Agency has alleged that trucks belonging to the Kawasaki WSB Racing Team were found to have contained quantities of class A drugs and a firearm when stopped at Dover on their way from Italy last month.

Officers allegedly found 18lbs (8kg) of cocaine, 157lbs (71kg) of amphetamine tablets and more than 220lbs (100kg) of cannabis. It was also alleged a handgun and 35 rounds of ammunition were also left lying on a table, unconcealed.

Four technicians from Paul Bird Motorsport, based in Morecambe, Lancashire – the company which runs the Kawasaki team – were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and importing controlled drugs. They were later bailed.

They were Philip Roe, 40, a mechanic and truck driver with the team; Gary Matthews, 50, a truck driver and tyre technician; Mattia Fontana, 27, an Italian mechanic; and Daniel Swyer, 32, who is also a mechanic.

Attempts to contact the team have so far been unsuccessful.

I'm sure that Paul Bird made his millions through a frozen food plant in Cumbria.

It'll be fascinating to see whether he was privy to this - and if so what the hell (or who) has he got stashed in the deep freeze? it's like something out of Goodfella's. That's a point, where's Sean Emmett these days?

Rumor is no one knew much about it.

Sad thing is, Rumour or not mud will stick.

This is not something that any sport needs and sadly it will bring the wrong type of publicity for a time, albeit probably a short period of time.

I also would be prepared to say now that there will be an increased focus on the WSBK paddock and other related paddocks as the result (foruc from authorities).

Just hope it is an isolated situation

Speed in the form of powder not horsepower, well that's Kawasaki's problem all along, right Rob?

Their press release said they didn't know anything about the drugs being there, and someone else must have done it. How can you not know 18lbs (8kg) of cocaine, 157lbs (71kg) of amphetamine tablets and more than 220lbs (100kg) of cannabis is in your truck?

Customs should have been suspicious from the beginning! what the hell would KawaSUCKi be doing at any type of respectable road racing event?
