With a double at Aragon, another on home soil at Donnington and yet another at Misano it is easy to see why Tom Sykes is leading the championship. The reigning #1 had a strong start to his title defense, banking 150 points in those three races alone and goes to France with a strong 31 point lead in the championship. However at some point Sykes' season went, not disastrously wrong but certainly off course. Perhaps it was being bumped off the track by his own teammate; or maybe it was the 6 races so far that Sykes has spent off the podium this year so far. Whatever the case the opposition is certainly closer than Sykes would prefer with fewer rounds to close the season than normal. His position is further complicated by rain predicted for Sunday morning. Sykes is a good wet weather rider, however this is hardly the time to prove that point. This could be the weekend where Sykes' excellence in the rain could give him the edge to wrap up the championship. He has a stellar record at this track. Conversely he could push the envelop that one second too far (yes we're looking at you Repsol Honda) and blow the championship wide open.

With the way that the season started, you wouldn't have thought that Marco Melandri would be in with a shout of winning the championship as the season comes to a close. Now I will grant you that he'd have to shout pretty loud - he is 87 points down with only 100 left to play for - but the turn around has been remarkable. While he found the podium once in each of the opening two rounds, Melandri went through a drought across three full weekends where it seemed that he couldn't buy a stepping stool. Then in Sepang everything changed and Melandri got his first double aboard the RSV4 Factory. He would claim another double the last time out at Jerez, making him the only rider other than Sykes to score 3 wins in 4 consecutive races for 2014. Rumor has Melandri with one foot in the door that leads back into MotoGP, and though he may not bring the title back to Noale coming to terms with the decidedly GP inspired chassis can only be to his benefit.
