Crutchlow has chimed in, saying the that Ducati Winglets cause a lot of disturbance (but interestingly says nothing of the Yamaha, maybe because he isn't close enough to them? ;) )

The winglets are a safety concern because they may cause riders risk of injury on the track? Can we rename the winglets "Whinelets" in honor of Cal Buttflow who is a SAFETY CONCERN to himself and every rider he is near.

He caused Dovi to crash last year, he doesn't know if it's because he hit the Italian's winglets or handlebars? Haha that's awesome. Cuntslow has crashes with such regularity regardless of the machine under him that if the winglets had a voice they'd scream for safety when he's nearby.

Actually, Cal Crashlow should demand winglets be installed on his machine, made of steal like those stunt guys put on their bikes. It will help him stay upright, and save the team millions on parts and stickers.

Wow, you really dislike Crutchlow don't you Jums?
No bro, I just like making fun of him. Easy target. Whines a lot, talks massive ...., plus crashes a lot and has a funny name that I can manipulate.

Getting back to the original point again...

I didn't realize how conspicuous those winglets have become on the bikes now. I didn't see any off-season practice sessions at all this year. I was really busy moving. (I was living in Korea and am back in USA now). After watching the first practice session yesterday, I was really shocked to see how big they were on the Ducati fairings.

At first I thought the ban on them for next year was ridiculous, but after seeing the Ducati, now I'm not sure.

Interesting, reading how the thread evolves. Krop assures us that the winglets break off safely, but I am still not comfortable with them. I feel it is the thin edge of the wedge (haha). Will there be a limit to their dimensions? Could they be a metre wide? Could they harvest crops on rest days? (John Britten loved to make sure that every motorcycle component had two functions.) I think the argument that other pieces of a motorcycle are dangerous, so why should we worry about another one, is spurious one. It,s a bit like saying that because our food contains many contaminants, adding a bit of of salmonella is nothing to worry about.
I think winglets add to the risk of rider injury, and although the additional risk may be small , it still adds to what is already a dangerous sport. I also think that even if you think the arguments for and against are evenly balanced, the casting vote should be against because of the hideosity factor. What was once a beautiful Ducati, is turning into a transformer toy.

starting to wonder if these winglets are going to harm slipstreaming on long straights??

yes they will help put extra weight on the front but wont they disrupt the airflow in the wrong kind of way for the riders who are following?

That's interesting, the riders that don't use winglets want them banned. Where are all the calls for undignified riders being opportunistic? Using the rider in front for a draft is a racing strategy not a right. If you don't want to experience the supposed "dirty air" of the rider in front, here is a suggestion, don't ....... follow him to try and get a tow.

I get the feeling winglets will eventually be banned, but not for this absolute ........ argument that they are dangerous, but rather from an obvious lobby to manipulate advantages. Once Ducati started to use them suddenly they became the big talking point. Desmodronic valve rev limits anyone? Well if Ducati is getting use out of their prototype designs, then let's ban. Lorenzo won the season opener with winglets, hey let's ban.

The winglets are ....... gay and look like .....

Funny but as you know I stopped following racing for a few years and started watching again in 2005. That was the first time I saw racing leathers with the spine protector hump at the neck and had the same reaction. Now I don't even notice them anymore.
