i remember him hinting that 2008 was his year to win the championship which he obviously did not do. to be honest, i thought it was kind of pathetic whenever he decided to go with the #2 plate, and i am curious to see what he will do now that he has lost even that title.

Going with 2 was fine. Going with 3 would be silly, and I'd say the same for Stoner going with 2 next season. Taking your position in the championship as your number works when whoever's ahead of you is doing the same. When the man in front of you is using his "normal" number it gets a bit ridiculous, imo.

and people say Valentino is arrogant for not taking the #1 plate

You could probably make arguments either way on that, but when there's no number 1 plate out there, sporting a 2 or 3 just looks rather odd imo.

I think #2 suits him, I've always thought of him as somewhat #2.

Rossi should be forced to use #1. He isn't bigger than the sport. Otherwise, it is an insult.

I don't think Rossi not running the #1 means he thinks he's bigger than the sport, it's more to do with #46 being such an integral part of his branding.

I like riders using their finishing position from the previous year. It's also fun if they have some favourite number like Rossi with 46. They are just numbers and I don't think it's stupid if there is no number 1 plate to have the number 2...infact I hope both Casey and Pedrosa take 2 and 3 respectively.

Declining an honor is often considered insulting, or a way of saying that you're somehow "above" such honors. I don't necessarily see it that way, but I see how some could.

I do. It is a declined honour.

His branding is now above the sports branding meaning he is bigger than the sport.

And Curve, I don't have a sore mangina...

Rossi has never taken #1, his first chance was in 2002 when he had just won his first 500 GP championship. At that point in time he was no different than Hayden or Stoner - won one WC in the top flight only. He still declined the #1 plate - was his branding bigger than the sport then?

Also consider that Bayliss made the exact same choice the same year in WSBK, keeping the #21. Do you consider that also insulting to the WSBK series?
