By salvage I mean reach the top 5.

Current standings:

5. Dovizioso - 129
6. Vermeulen - 117
7. Edwards - 109
8. Hayden - 104

Hayden is now on better equipment than the 3 guys ahead of him.

Can he beat Vermeulen by 14 and Dovi by 26 in the next 4 rounds.

It actually seems doable.

It would be awesome to see him up on the podium. THat would be a big .... you to the honda dudes that don't want him on the team or didn't give a champion his due.

If he beats Pedrosa a couple more times I'll be well happy.

I don't think he'll beat Dovi to 5th though.

+1

Dovi will gather more points, I'm sure he can over take Vermeulen and Edwards

He may pass Edwards & Vermi, but I doubt Dovi.

Either way, moving from HRC is like a salvage to me.

As much as I would love to see him beat Dovi, I think 5th is probably going to be out of reach.

Making up 6 points a round a pretty significant task. Short of being on the podium about every race (and not just the low step either) making up that number of points requires bad results from Dovi.

After watching Nicki and getting the "vibe" from him that now has is out of Honda and off to a new team he seems to have found his mojo. I seriously think in his current frame of mind he can do it, of course Dovi (and CV/CE) isn't going to roll over and say, here take 5th.

I think more than anything (and I'm not a mind reader - I'll leave it to Jum to tell me what Nicki thinks) he wants to kick Dani's arse to the end of the season on the No. 2 bike with the No.2 tyres. If that brings him Dovi's position then so be it.

Right, and since (particularly Dovi) isn't going to roll over, the realistic performance requirement for Nicky to secure that spot would be something like his best 4-race stretch in GPs if Dovi doesn't fade.

If Nicky suddenly finds top consistent form for the rest of the season, then I would think his side of the garage should be asking Michelin some serious questions. Because the only thing that's different is his team mate has changed tyre manufacturers. To me that would mean there is a distinct possibility he wasn't getting the same rubber Dani was.

Notice Dani was crap in the rain at Indy again? Now this wasn't the same guy that was blitzing the field in the wet in Germany was it? My guess is Lorenzo got Dani's tyres at Indy. Hence he puts the bike on the podium. In past years Lorenzo has been nowhere in the rain and I'll bet if everyone is on Bridgestones next year that both Dani & Jorge will again be nowhere every wet race. I don't trust Michelin so I hope they don't become sole tyre supplier.

Nickys form will turn around next year, when he doesn't have to play second fiddle to Puig's politics.

Yup.

Agreed. Can't see him catching Dovi though.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Mick D @ Sep 25 2008, 08:53 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Its doable but I really don't think he can catch any of them.
Not even Edwards?

If Colin keeps getting results like he has in the last few races, Nicky could easily overtake him.
Vermi is more of a challenge, but there's Phillip Island coming up, and aren't the Suzuki's pretty weak there?

i am hoping that the new chassis will have cured some of that problem. if they can run the same tyres as stoner and rossi, without eating the side grip up too quickly, thenexpect a much better showing from them compared to last year..

and yes, colin is easily in nickys sights..

Can someone please explain how all the Nicky fans can complain that he's on the worst Honda with the worst Michelins and yet they think he can improve his results despite signing for Ducati next year? Oh yes I can see Honda and Michelin giving him good equipment now he's decided to leave both of them.
So I voted no, due to his equipment.

Interesting that people think that 5th in the championship is "salvaging" his season. Nicky's season was over a couple of races ago and his career with Honda was finished well over a season ago.

No one remembers who finishes runner up in the championship after a couple of years - let alone fifth. As racers are only really interested in winning; I can't see him getting that excited about finishing 5th behind his poison dwarf of a teammate

I suspect that this will be a season that Nicky would rather forget - his signing for Ducati aside and he will only be thinking of next year

good point. he probably knew his season was ...... after the first practice in qatar. after that debacle, he probably knew that he would be riding something other than a repsol honda come 2009. IMO hes looking to leave honda in 2008 with as much dignity as he can but he isnt going to bust his ... for it and jeopardise his 2009 season...
