A place where numbers don't tell the whole truth.
Why would a World Champion need to make a visual statement such as "Numbers Don't Lie #1" for the world to see?

On serious note though ..... that's the impression I get. He's got the plate what more justification does he need?

If this topic was started as another way to bash Hayden then i think its a poor choice because his rival and your favorite rider is far more guilty of the same thing.

However, speaking in general terms about why world champions disply motifs and logos, symbols and nicknames and all that kind of stuff, i think its about ego. These guys work pretty damn hard to achieve these goals and when they do, they want the world to know.

get back in your pram Tom - i'm not knocking Hayden. But he's not stupid

He can read
<
and he'll know that he's been referred to as a "Caretaker Champion" etc etc. (not by me i'd like to point out)

Why else would he come up with a slogan like 'Numbers Don't Lie.....'

I can find no excuse for calling hime Pop Diddy or whatever

Since yer so good at knowing what every post is all about show me who is far more guilty?

Displaying a #1 is one thing but it seems to me if you need to justify your position with blantent statements then maybe your belief may not be all that complete.

Although i hear a lot of people, particularly on here who don't think a lot of Hayden, i havn't actually read any negative press on him. I've not seen any articles or stories written about him which have been questioning his worth or anything like that. I am not saying they don't exist because i try pretty hard to stay away from the uk bike press, but i wonder how exposed to negative reception hayden himself is.

Reagrdless, i heard that Nicky was amused by the numbers dont lie phrase when he heard it in a jay-z interview adn decided to use it. i think it could have been a hit back to the haters, even though he said that wasnt the case.

I don't think self belief is an issue at all. I mean is a motif on his arse as "blatant" as the snow white and the seven dwarfs prank or calling oyurself the doctor. I wouldn't suggest that rossi's self belief isn't up to scratch. Its more likely to be one of a number of other things. like a reminder to the people you don't like and negative press or rivals. It could be a celebration, or a way of sharing your achievments with the fans, or it could just be something that amused you and your friends sometime and became what takes up the space on your leathers.

The lack of press is, in and of itself negative.

Its hard to judge because i was under the impression the US was pretty cold on bike racing anyway so its hard to get noticed even if he is the world champion. And i don't read a lot of the british bike mags or press because its all pretty terrible.

Come on .... The Doctor? That's a nick name which based on results is pretty accurate don't you think? Snow white and the seven dwarfs prank? Pretty cool play on his title achievements huh? Has Vale (and you brought him into this so he's who I'll use) ever shown something that would question his achievement such as the 06 champ has?
Who knows .... soon Rossi may do a lil' diddy called 99 race wins on the wall.

He's the current world champ and like the rest of the riders puts his life on the line to improve or continue a winning streak.
He's at the top of my favourite sport so I believe he has the right to display whatever he likes, after all, I couldn't beat him in a race so I won't judge his choices. (alright a bit hypocritical but I'm in an ambient mood today).

Having read this it has occured to me that comparitively speaking Hayden is being plenty modest about his title. He had number dont lie onhis .... That says basically, read the results and thats all there is to it. That breakes the mould a little from other world champions, including the one mentioed above, who are much more egotistical and go quite far out of their way to tell you all about how good they are.

well i AGREE with haystack and admire his honesty buy saying numbers dont lie.
8th place losal, see numbers dont lie he's crap.

Using numbers releases us from opinions like "crap". The correct statement was - Seven people went round Qatar better than he did.

Probably because he's afraid no-one will recognise him with the #1 instead of the #69. Anyway let him make adverts and whatever saying he's riding with the #1 plate, he's only heaping pressure onto himself.

I heard Nicky's training wasn't going so well & that for Jerez his ... will read:

"I ATE ALL THE PIES"

I dont think the pressure on him would change depending on the number he runs with and the logos he uses. Its not like people would just forget hes the champion if he ran the 69.
