Each year, Australian BRW magazine publishes a list of the highest paid Australian sportsmen. A couple of bike racers have featured, but the numbers are surprising.

Chad Reed AMA Moto X Aus$ 8.7m (approx. US$ 5.65m)
Mat Mladin AMA Superbike Aus$ 6.6m (approx. US$ 4.29m)
Casey Stoner Moto GP Aus$ 3.5m (approx. US$ 2.275m)
Chris Vermeulen Moto GP Aus$ 1.5m (approx. US$ 975,000)
Troy Baylis World SBK Aus$ 1.5m (approx. US$ 975,000)
Jason Crump Speedway Aus$ 1.0m (approx. US$ 650,000)

Not sure how accurate these numbers are but interesting the difference between Mladin and Baylis. One AMA Champ, one World Champ.

Really, neither Stoner or Baylis are earning that much.
I bet there are a number of others in MotoGP earning more than Stoner.
Rumours were that Hopkins was being paid US$ 5.0m by Kawasaki.

I thought Bayliss would have had more than Stoner
<

I had no idea guys made that much racing dirtbikes, what's Reed doing with all that cash? Bayliss, definitely underpaid in comparison to his fellow Aussies.

Not sure if this report in BRW is correct.
It was reported beginning 2007 that Stoner's base salary at Ducati in 2007 was Euro 1,500,000 + win bonuses. Surely this would have increased for 2008 and he has signed to 2010.
The Aus$ 3,5m quoted might be a lot less than the true amount

Would be interesting to know what each team pays its riders without additional private sponsorship deals. No way to ever find out, but it would be a measure of who gets what comparred to their results.
Stories of Rossi earning Euro 20.0m a year ??? How much of that comes from Yamaha
What about Pdrosa, Lorenzo, Loris, Hayden, Hopkins, the Tech 3 guys, etc.

There's a lot of money in American motocross. Based on what I see at the dealers and equipment shops, loads of MX bikes and loads of MX .... get sold in this country. Frankly, I'm not surprised Reed gets that much from Suzuki. I'd really be interested how big his contract with Thor is.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Traverser @ Dec 10 2008, 09:48 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>I'd bet Melandri made more than Stoner this year
<

I wouldn't doubt it.

I read once (god knows where) that Hayden makes about U$10m a year. Only 1,5m of that was Honda (not sure whether that was with or without bonuses, not that that really matters as Hayden himself has said that Honda only pays for wins and well er... OK-let's not go there again), the rest were sponsorship deals. The Alpinestar deal alone was already over U$1m.
Not sure how right that 10m quote is but considering the sponsorship deals it is probably close.

I read Stoner "only" got €1m a year plus bonuses from Ducati, also this year (2008) as they signed him before he won the title. That 3.5mA$ is probably the total wages from Ducati excl. sponsorship deals. And Melandri's original deal was rumoured to be €3m for two years which probably explains some of Casey's head-shaking this year.

I am not sure whether that Vale's 20m is only from Yamaha, I expect those numbers also include sponsorship deals and I also remember that he makes more than 20m a year in total. I thought his Yamaha paycheck was around 10m or so?

Anybody, feel free to correct me with links and sources cause I would love to know how much they all make.

Not surprised (assuming accuracy) that the dirt guys earn more. Bigger market as they are promoting cheaper bikes that can be ridden off-road with no license and no insurance to a wider "youth market".

My gut however says that most of the salaries are the product of ........ journalism. I know I've seen higher figures for all those roadracers. No ....... way Bayliss was riding for that kind of chicken scratch.

Really, at the end of the day, all these guys do is ride a motorcycle on various racetracks around the globe. The money is pretty ...... good to me, whatever way you look at it. Most "elite" sportsmen are highly overpaid, and I'd hardly say that earning 7 figure sums for riding a bike is a tough way to earn a living.

I dunno if Rossi's new contract is higher/lower but he was making 10M Euros Basic, around 2M on race win bonuses and another 2M if he won the championship.

Personal Sponsorships 8-10M on top of that.

This sheds a whole new light on maladin in my eyes. i never respected him at all as a racer for never leaving the ama. But if he is making more money than 2 of the best riders in the world (bayliss and stoner) he is just smart. even though he doesnt even come close to either of them in riding ability. i think he makes so much cash is because in america The gsxr is the number one selling bike every ..... that can twist a throttle is on one.

Wow, your one tough hombre. I would like to think that Maladin would be somewhat close to Bayliss and Stoner. Of course we will never know. Although we may get some indication when we see how Spies does.

He makes a lot of cash because he gets results

There are squids on every kind of bike

Matt Mladin has a very successful motorcycle gear import businees that makes him about half of that 6+ million figure. He reportedly receives 3 million US from Suzuki. The Chad Reed figure is correct and includes endorsements.Makes you wonder what Bubba just got to sign with Yamaha considering he beats Reed like a borrowed mule.Rossi makes over 30 million counting endorsements which puts him on scale with other world class athletes, except Tiger Woods. He reportedly makes 115-120 million a year with about 90% of that being endorsements.I still say its a ....... shame that bike racers are paid [on the whole] as little as they are.Especially GP and WSBK.
