How much money is there around?

I ask because I had a totally ...... weekend at Snetterton in the superkart with 3 engine seizures. 1 was the new single ring piston picking up on a transfer port, second was the fuel pump failing (i've had 3 go in a year, yet ran the same one on my 125 for 3 years, go figure) which sent me spinning off the track at Murrarys and finally the 3rd time burnt away the exhaust side of the brand new piston. Firstly, i;ve realised that no one in superkarts who claims to be an expert has .... all idea what they are talking about and simply just have the cash to replace any parts they blow up. We run a near bog standard CR250 engine and in terms of carb settings and ignition timing have changed nothing since the start of the year, when i've been running well yet this weekend in various weather conditions the ....... engine blows up 3 times.

I'm giving it up, I'm a contract engineer and earning good money and its leaving me skint just to compete in races that the piece of .... kart wont even finish (the general concencus is that 250 superkarts are 'high maintainence' and need to be rebuilt with a lot of new parts each race). What my question is, is how can everyone else afford it? Like I say I consider myself in a well paid job but I cannot keep up financially with kids who are in university or apprentices who are paying 'teams' to give them works support or run them, where the .... do they get the money to do this? Two brothers I know who race are both in university, their dad was apparently unemployed until recently yet they turn up in a full race truck with fancy awning and are run/supported but one of the big player teams in the series who are probably charging £2000 a race for their services.

Rant over, but i'm just wondering where the .... people seem to get their money these days....

IT Is strange just look in sport where there are paid rides/drivers

even motogp ppl get paid rides some with good money backing i bet

but who wants to sponsor these ppl to get zero coverage in whats becoming a niche sport

go figure

Something is drastically wrong if you haven't finished a race on it!!

From your description ........ 1st question ....... are you putting the piston in the correct way? ( arrow towards the exhaust port usually )

if thats not it ...... and you are melting pistons ......... mixture too lean and/or you are way undergeared.

3 times is pretty bad ....... do others run the CR engine? How is their's set up for jets carby etc. ? Have you tried talking with such "others"?

Barry thanks for your input but it's a bit ignorant to assume I'm making a rookie error of not putting the piston in the wrong way. We think it's a cylinder head issue but will find out for sure soon

Not as "rookie" as blowing your engine 3 times!!, hence why it had to be asked.

I think you've caught an STD from the animals you've been butt .......

Just a thought #22. Are you using the same make and alloy type piston as you have used before without issue. if your using a lower silicon alloy you may be getting too much expansion so need greater piston to liner clearances

The standard cast hypereutectic pistons that were in my engine only needed about 1 thou clearance but when i switched to 4032 forged which still have a fairly high silicon content i needed about 3-4 thou. Had i used 2618 i would have needed even greater clearances to allow for great expansion experienced by lower silicon content alloy.

Good point Rog but I think its ok, they run quite a big clearance on the kart spec motors and I got the clearance set quite big (can't reemember off the top of my head) when I had the barrel replated and gave them a piston to use. We normally use Prox, and used one Honda OE piston this time with the same results. Dad is going to check the squish and CC of the old and new head this week, as the new head is all that was changed.

Will keep you posted and get pics when I can, cheers

Yeah there could be a miss match with piston and head especially if its been skimmed. Could be just a case of needing a thicker head gasket. Do you pre-mix the oil and fuel or are you using an auto lube injection?

Pre mixed. We shimmed up the barrel and set the squish according to specifications, but i'm awaiting the CC readings off my dad

i dunno what its like where you are from mate, but here in australia i know of heaps of blokes that are right into their motorsport, and not cheap .... either. top level boat racers, drag racers, drift and such, and they all spend BIG dollars. you know what they all share in common? they are all business owners with very creative accountants
<
in laymans terms, their racing is a tax right off.

dont get me wrong, they still fork out cash, but the tax man takes care of a heap of it.

An uncle of mine worked for a company for years. One day the police raided this firm (glass blowing) and closed it down. Over the coming months and trial of the boss many things came to light that none of the workers were aware of. One of which was their boss a a mutli world champ power boat racer. The reason his firm got busted was it turned out he was a very large scale drug producer and dealer. He was making amphetamines on a very large scale, made possible buy the fact he was able to make the lab equipment needed at his glass company. I read he was able to make £47mil worth per day.

My uncle told me there were a couple of engines under covers at the place where he worked. They just didn't think anything of it. Turned out these engines were worth several hundreds of thousands each.

Bloody hell Rog, its amazing isnt it?

I know of a Jaguar Dealership near here that closed because the owner was found to be doing something dodgy, when they sold the building the new renovators knocked down a wall and found an as-new Jaguar XJ220 sitting there on blocks!

Yup, hiding the proceeds of crime is an art in itself. funding motorsport is one way as most peeps have not got a clue as to exactly how much money it takes to be competitive. My Uncle thought these engines stashed where he worked were worth a few grand. In fact it was nearer a quarter of a million each, and that was back in the 90's.

Finding a brand new XJ220 is what wet dreams are made of. Bloke probably bought it then didn't know what to do with it. Showing money in such an obvious way is the sure way to get caught.

yeah we got a fair bit of that happening too. one of our top level door slammer drag racers, Brett Stephens, was shut down for drugs a few years ago. So there you go 22, get into the drug trade mate and your woes will be solved haha.

Wasn't that a shitstorm. Cops confiscated 4 doorslammers, a couple of funny cars, 3 or so nitro fuel bikes. He went from a single car to the biggest professional drag team in the world in a couple of years. All sold off at a police auction.

I heard an outlaw MC club funded his racing in return for him hauling & distributing drugs around the country in his race transporters.
